Alpha SS Drive

Looking for ingormation and or where abouts of a Alpha SS outdrive. I've heard they are 2" shorter than standard and have a lower similar to a performance outboards. HElp?????

eMotiondriver 04-07-2003 07:45 PM

I know of one in great shape but you'll have to buy the whole boat it's a 20 something Scarab with sm Blk. I just got off the phone with him. Call Glen 443.790.6873 Mabye to can hash out a good price...

glassdave 04-07-2003 08:26 PM

i looked into getting a pair for my scorpion and was told that they are not really worth the effort when you consider they are almost imposible to find (kind of like the ssm#2), parts are getting scarce, and they arent avaliable in a counter rotator. my biggest concern was if i broke one how long i would be down. if you are running a single you might be able to deal with these problems a bit better. i have heard they do perform better and i have also been told they share the lower unit with the v6 outboard mercs. good luck

robsunlimited 04-07-2003 08:49 PM

THEY ARE SHORTER AND HAVE A BUILT IN NOSECONE,I BELIEVE THAT THE PROP SHAFT IS FARTHER BACK.
I'VE ALSO BEEN TOLD THEY USE THE SAME LOWER AS A V6 OUTBOARD.
GEARS ARE ALL THE SAME AS STANDARD ALPHA AND GEN 2, THEY JUST USE DIFFERENT SHAFTS. BUT SHAFTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

DO HAVE A CUSTOMER WITH THAT IS SELLING ONE WITH A BAD UPPER 1.32 GEARSET. IT WAS COMPLETELY REBUILT @15 HOURS BEFORE IT BROKE. IT ALSO COMES WITH A DRIVE SHOWER. HE WANTS $1200 AND WILL GIVE A GOOD USED SET OF GEARS AND A NEW SET OF BEARINGS AND SEALS.

Biggus 08-29-2007 09:03 PM

A buddy of mine has two of them that he was considering selling. He wanted around 2k (each)or so Give him a call, Jim 207-693-6264

Tinkerer 08-29-2007 09:13 PM

They are 2 1/2 inches shorter than a stock ALPHA

MOBILEMERCMAN 08-29-2007 09:23 PM

Cig 3, It is 2.5 inches shorter like Tinker said. The case starts out the same as the 2.4, 2.5 CLE it gets some different finishing touches. In the right situation on the right boat 5 mph was possible. Doesn't mean everyboat will benefit from it. It should only be used with small blocks up to 300 hps. If your were determined a counter set up is possible. Good Luck.

I have one on my boat.. for $3500 I can sell it. Fresh rebuild previous owner had done. Just painted a few months back, black top, silver bottom. Drive shower included. Been running a 550+ hp small block behind it since july. You will never hurt it with the right driving. Hell I spin mine sometimes up to 6500 rpm getting on plane, cavataite like hell getting on plane but when she hooks up... ACCELLAAARRRAATIONN!!

Alpha 1 SS Lower

Does anyone know if it is possible to put an Alpha 1 SS lower on a stock '86 Alpha Gen 1 upper? I have heard it only requires a different drive shaft. Will the cases match up?
Thanks.........RJ

Tow-N-One 04-23-2008 03:09 PM

I had a 22' pachanga witha 330 horse 454. I gained just under 5mph with this drive. I was easy out of the hole never had a problem. And they are 2.5 inches shorter. Go for it!!!

BUIZILLA 04-23-2008 03:39 PM

I don't know anybody that's used one with a stock upper gear case and a longer driveshaft... not saying it can't be done, but the main advantage is the 2.5" shorter overall and the shorter driveshaft is unobtanium

handfulz28 04-23-2008 04:29 PM

What year was the Gen II first out? I think '87 was the first year for the SS and seem to recall it being a Gen II upper...not sure though.

If someone can machine an alignment shaft, how hard would it be to reproduce the SS driveshaft?

I was thinking the same thing on making one.... my SS upper and lower was the real beans on a shortened Gen 1 style upper and Jamie's was on a modified Gen II upper

phragle 04-23-2008 04:45 PM

wasnt there a thread a few weeks ago about somebody shortening an alpha 1 by taking a chunk out of the upper??

Also, my prop guy said that the SS would probably work really well with an extension box too.

You do realize this thread is more than 5 years old?

wwahl 09-13-2017 01:18 AM

Yes, but some of us still are using the Alpha SS and want to know where spare can be found.

dereknkathy 09-13-2017 05:32 AM

but people from 5 years ago are unlikely to be on this forum these days. send a PM to someone. if they still have same email address, they will get it, or at least a notice about full inbox. or start a new thread in general or parts wanted section. the rest of us don't need to read through 10 year old threads. yoabout 50 pounds more...ur best bet is to buy a junk bravo boat and strip the transom assy and small parts. sell the trailer. scrap the seized engine. now go get an imco shortie lower. you have spent a little more than the price of a used 30 year old SS and have a drive that will hold up and you can get parts for. weighs about 50 pounds more than alpha setup.

Clustergear 09-13-2017 06:48 AM

I found one for a friend about a month ago on FB. There are two places to watch for parts powerboat swap shop and power boat swap. Now the bad news. They are older units so don't expect insides to be in the best of condition I took it apart and upper gear set bad, no big deal. The lower pinion shaft was twisted and as you known they are shorter than std MR, the shaft is no longer available. I gave him a std MR pinion shaft and sent him to S&S Propeller. They are going to cut down std. pinion shaft and respline it. Also there is a Lake George Donzi group on FB. The group has members that restore older Donzi's
