Dodge V-10

what do you guys think I'm looking for a 3/4 ton truck to pull with I've always been a GM guy but found a great looking Dodge with the V-10 anyone running them? I here that they are gas hogs even compaired to a 454 any input would be great!

Waterfoul 04-10-2003 06:53 PM

dyno, friend uses one for his lawn care service. Gets 5-6 towing his service trailer, and between 8 and 10 without it. That's worse than a 454. They are torque monsters though. If I were you, I'd be shopping for a Cummins Dodge. Or something like Crazyhorse has.

dyno 04-10-2003 07:12 PM

yea but the money factor comes into play you can add about 3k for the deisel I really want a 454 GMC but the Dodge was real nice. What year is yours Mike? this one is a 99 loaded out with all the goodies leather and only 45k miles for 16k I thought that was a pretty good deal.....

car54driver 04-10-2003 07:42 PM

I bought a new Dodge V-10 in 2000. You can buy a lot of gas for $3000.

dyno 04-10-2003 07:57 PM

car54driver so do you like your truck?

eMotiondriver 04-10-2003 08:14 PM

Many of my friends love the V-10 for the power but cry and wish they had the diesel. They say it get's 10 mph towing and the same without a trailer or load..

car54driver 04-10-2003 08:16 PM

Yes, I tow a '32 Fountain with it and it has more than enough power.

CAP071 04-10-2003 08:34 PM

great power- crappy mileage

Hmmmm sounds like most boats on here! :eureka:

jollyroger 04-10-2003 09:15 PM

I got one... Special ordered it in '97... she has 110K on her now, tows like a champ. the down side is I get 11mpg with the big tires... headwind, tailwind, loaded, unloaded, towing... 10mpg...

Love the truck! I would buy another one in a minute... the only issue I have had (knock on wood) is the fuel pump went at 85K...

Woodsy

PS: For the record, I bleed FORD blue.. when I bought the Ram Ford had not come out with the SuperDutys, and well... friends don't let friends drive Chevy's...

Tinkerer 04-10-2003 09:26 PM

YES -- you can buy a lot of gas for $3000 but imagine every time you pull up to that gas pump and have to put out $45 to fill the tank. And Your friend with the diesel only has to stop every second or third time that you stop. Think about how much that is going to burn your A$$. I know I would hate it. I get 11 1/4 MPG pulling my boat. And 17 city. I will buy another diesel.

Waterfoul 04-10-2003 10:55 PM

dyno, that is a good price on that truck. Mine is a 98 that I bought a year ago with 45,000 on it for 16,900. I have the 5.9l (360ci) in mine. Mileage sucks too. I don't have the leather but it is loaded other than that. I'm not a leather seat guy anyway, so I don't really mind. And I tend to tear out factory stereos too. Not enough bass. :D

Oh, and mine now has nearly 94,000 on it. I drive a vehicle to death!!!!! It's that stinkin 58 mile comute I make 6 days a week. Agghh!!

What color is it dyno? Who has it? carfax on it? Almost seems too cheap.

Have 97 3/4ton with a v-10, 354 gear ratio pulling about 9000lbs not a problem. Will get 10 mpg pulling if I don't push it to hard and have a headwind other wise it can go less. I get 13 to 14 highway no trailer. In town all depends on how you drive.if you have a heavy foot taking off it will suck the gas. I don't baby it by any means and to date real happy with the truck. 76,000 miles on it now. If I pulled more often I will be thinking diesel next time.

dyno 04-11-2003 06:50 AM

Mike the truck is at Elhart its a local trade the guy bought two more Dodges for work it looks a clean as any I've ever seen, its silver like Kaamas, $16,800 is where he's at came down from $18,600 Dave hates the V10 so I'm going to keep looking for a GMC with a big block.

Interceptor 04-11-2003 11:24 AM

I got a 2002 V-10 last of the old body style Ram. It has the long bed with quad cab, 4wd. Pulls a 32' Fountain sportfish cruiser with a Loadmaster steel trailer very well. total weight over 10 K with a tank of fuel.
Does burn gas but the price was right. Only problem I've found is there are limited aftermarket things available compared to the diesels and Ford, GM gas powertrails.

DURA-MAX,,,A WRECKER QUALITY TRUCK ALONG WITH THE P/S !!

Dodge is good though :D :D

Treadwellmotorsports 04-11-2003 11:59 AM

if your going to buy a late model just make sure you are 98 and above because the 97 cummins diesel get the same milage as the v 10. if you buy new get the hp cummins. 305hp. it gets almost 20 mpg and if you put the gale banks system on it it makes it 400hp and milage is 24mpg. doesent make a diffrence towing. it the same unless your in the mountains all the time.

Dyno -- I recently bought a 2000 V-10 with 35K miles on it and absolutely love it! It's got all the goodies except leather (who wants to stick to seats in the summer!). I wanted power without going to a diesel. If I was going to tow something every day or towed really long distances, I'd have given in and bought a diesel, but I only tow on weekends. Maybe it's a girl thing, but diesels are stinky and loud. I average 12 mpg regular driving and 9 mpg towing, which is what I was getting with the 351 Ford I had before this. I love this truck! It'sexy, it's powerful and it tows like a dream.

PIERFECT 04-11-2003 05:22 PM

I owned Dodge V10. Gas hog big time. Torque does not even compare to Duramax diesel. New duramax has posted scores as high as 23 MPG towing nothing, 12 MPH towing 33 Baja - hardly feels like you are towing anything. V-10 resale is nonexistant. (almost) I (FINALLY) had one low offer that I had to accept. You will surely get your money back for the deisel, not the V-10

LapseofReason 04-11-2003 05:30 PM

In the price range he is shopping in 16k the best truck for that money is going to be 95-97 Ford Powerstroke, the old Cumming's and 6.5 GM don't hold a candle to the PSD. But with the 0% financing you can get now it would be hard for me not to just sell the stuff I had a go buy one nice new truck and use it all the time.

dyno 04-11-2003 07:40 PM

around here you cant touch a Power stroke for less than 20k I looked at a 97 crew Short box last fall and the guy got almost 20k for a 97 cant justify the money I only tow the boat 6-10 times per season.

dyno 04-12-2003 07:29 AM

  I picked up a 97 350 crew PSD last year for $14K

dyno 04-12-2003 07:57 AM

pretty good deal!

dlbCheckmate 04-12-2003 11:26 AM

I bought a 2000 Dodge V-10 from a salvage dealer. 30,000 miles dirt cheap, Love the truck, hate the mileage. Filled up last night in South Bend for $43.00, I wanted a diesel, but the wife said NO. I think it all depends on what you want, and what you can live with. I am lucky I only drive 6 miles to work and 1 mile to the boat launch. I would not hesitate to buy another Dodge or V-10. As far as after market parts, they have the only one I need ... Superscharger !!!!
