I'm currently looking to buy a used 2000/ 01 yukon/tahoe A lot of them come with 4800 vortec engine instead of the 5300 vortec engine. They both spec. at the same towing load. I know that the truck is on the small side for towing my 30' cobra but I only go about 1 +1/2 mile to ramp.Maybe a 12 mile tow 3 times a year. Has anybody ever used this 4800 vortec yukon for towing and going up the boat ramp? If so, how did they do? Only asking cause I'v passed on a couple of real nice Yukons because they have the 4800 vortec engine.Iwould buy the 2500 suburban but its going to also be my wifes every day car and she don't like the size of them for around town. Any input ? Thanks Keith

If your only going a mile and a half , it's obviously not highway ,so you should be ok. BUT , and this is a biggie , if you are involved in an accident (your fault or not) and are over your rated tow capacity , it can affect the insurance outcome

I towed my dads 24 formula 1969 solid boat around 9-10k weight . put a serious load on truck but it was only 20 miles. You are right at the max i think. at the ramp I put it in 4wd low and it came right out. Use NO overdrive when towing. mine was a 5300 but a friend had a 4800 (we towed the same boat with it also)and it was ok but not great. Short trip keep it in a lower gear for the much needed RPM'S

I work for general motors in Janesville, Wisconsin where we make the yukons,suburbans,tahoe. I would suggest going with the 5.3L the resale on this is going to be alot better and the rating for the insurance company is a big thing. The insurance companies are getting really sticky about this!!! Have you thought about buying a denali it has a 6.0L and an awesome ride, would tow that easy. If you buy new here is my discount so you should wheel and deal off of this!! Take 15.5% off the sticker it's called gms discount then add local tax minus rebates. see example
40,000 list 15.5% off=33,800+5% tax=35490- rebate3000=32490

Jason has a better deal.. have to be an employee to get gms pricing. The site that I have also shows you the GMS (gms discount) pricing guide. usually save you 50-100 or so dollars per option and off the invoice price.

I have a 2001 Yukon Denali 6.0L and tow a Formula 303SR1, weighs about 9000lbs. with trailer. Locally I tow about 50 miles round trip and I have towed from NJ to NH with it.

If you're only towing 1-2 miles, You should be fine, and I agree with J riggs, get the 5.3 liter. Much better gas economy than my 6.0L. (I get 12-13 around home and 17 highway) Your wife will love it, mine does! Not many people want one wiith the 4800.

Only problem is that I spent all my money on putting the boat together so now I have to buy used But because tripps wont sell me his Yukon, I'll just borrow it every weekend. So tripps fuel up on friday nights buddy! Thanks for input guys Keith

You want the 5.3 and a 4.10 axle if possible. I have a 2000 XL w/ 5.3 and 3.73 axle, a little disappointed and I tow a 5000 lb horse trailer.

Everyone is dead on with the 5.3 recommendation. They are a healthy little small block that will have much better resale than the 4.8.

Don't worry about the OverDrive issue. Tow it in OD all you want, that's what the Tow/Haul feature is for. Does a great job of keeping the engine wound up and in the optimum RPM range for towing.
