On our wednesday night cruises, we pulled up along side and took a look inside with spotlights, eerie is the word. Of course this was in the late 90's now they probably won't let you near it.
The props were on the aft deck and they were HUGE!! Would be nice to see it refurbed!!! :D

Great news!
The first time I saw the ship was when I was taking a boat down to FL & I saw her in the VA ship yard.
It was sad to see such a piece of American history in such condition.
I'm glad the SS United States will be refurbished!!!!!!!!!

Nothing is "_____-proof". For example, if you say that something is "idiot-proof", someone will just come up with a better idiot.

Same goes for torpedos, I guess...

I had never heard of this ship before, but when I went to Philly two years ago, I caught a glimpse of it when I had to go to the UPS facility. When I got back, I looked it up on the web.....and was suprised about it's history.

Ron- You and I are the same age, and I remember very well the USS United States, The France, and all the other large passenger ships coming in and out of NYC and mooring at the passenger terminal (we lived in Tenafly, NJ).
I remember one day in particular that the United States was sitting next to the passenger liner 'Michelangelo'- both had made the crossing during a wicked storm. The Michelangelo was in VERY bad shape, the United States was virtually unscathed.
As a kid, seeing those ships was always a highlight of our frequent trips into the city.

I think it is terrific that this ship is going to have a second chance!
