Which cell phone company to go with???

I need to switch cell phone companies. I will be going from one phone to three. I currently have Cingular service in Chicago area but I hear there are better ones out there and I could save some money.
Any suggestions ???

CESSNA 04-18-2003 04:46 PM

Its the deal you work with the carrier I've found most of the time and stay with a phone company cingular /alltell ,ect

Sydwayz 04-18-2003 05:06 PM

AT&T without a doubt. They all suck, but AT&T sucks the least; and they are clearly the dominant carrier in Chicago.

BAJA WILL 04-18-2003 07:16 PM

DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT go with sprint!!!!!!!!! I have been having to use them because of work and I cannot imagine using them by choice!! Their customer service is for chit and if they mess up your bill, yea their fault, you still need to pay it to even get through to some one to fix it,

Also their phone insurance is a joke, $35 deduct, plus $4 a month for it. at that rte you can buy a new phone every year.

*** All of my friends have SUNCOM, and love it, if you don;t have them in your area, I think they are apart of ATT

WILL:rolleyes:

Hi Bigwavz...

AT&T was my fave having used Verizon and Nextel. Of course, in my area, the choices are limited (Malibu) for good reception. Let us know who you go with! Cheers!

mopower 04-18-2003 08:00 PM

Had Verizon , had friends with others. Now have AT&T and like Sydwayz says" AT&T sucks the least"

convincor 04-18-2003 10:23 PM

Never a problem.

Until I resigned to sit on the beach, I worked at Wall Street fund and managed about $900 million which I invested in wireless companies. I will tell you that they all have strengths and weakensses. Use the one which has the best service in your area and which offers you the rate you can afford for the amount of service you need. T-Mobile will be the cheapest and will allow you the freedom of roaming in 170+ other countries with the same phone and number. AT&T is a dominant player in Chicago, but they are in the middle of transitioning their network from TDMA to GSM but are having trouble paying for the upgrade. They also have problems with a lack of spectrum capacity to handle their customer base in many areas. Sprint has the most spectrum, but has the fewest number of cells in many areas leading to service interruptions. Cingular and Verizon probably provide the best overall service, but you pay a lot for it and they are only marginally better than anyone else.

I use T-Mobile and have for years even though I didn't invest much in them, if that gives you an idea of how crappy the choices can be.

HOUSTONPROP 04-19-2003 02:40 PM

at&t UNLIMITED

I have at&t unlimited calling with long distance no other fees applied ,contracted for 2 yrs 100.00 a month plus taxes which equals 114.00 a month ,I use about 2000 to 2,500 minutes a month ,The reception is great .But there are certain zones it can only be used which these are major cities so no problems,Have never had any problems other than getting my 100.00 rebate on the phone which is seimens westinghouse ,not at&t. This has been almost a year now and no rebate:hothead: I don't think they offer this anymore but sure got in at the right time. CAN YOU HEAR ME KNOW/:rolleyes:

Verizon here Had AT/T it was horrible here Philly!

Turbojack 04-20-2003 09:10 PM

got sprint & verzion. As stated above Sprint Customer service sucks. Have had the same verizon phone number since 88. My answer is Verizon.

GotTheFever 04-20-2003 09:41 PM

When my Sprint contract was up, I dropped them like a bad habit. Service sucked, and if you are not in a major city or along a major highway the roaming charges rack up quickly. Just joined up with Verizon. So far, the service and coverage area has been excellent.

Audiofn 04-20-2003 10:00 PM

I have tried 4 different cell phone companies over the years. At&T and Cingular had good coverage but with 1400 buck a month bills they were NOT worth it. Cingular was the worst by far as they would bill the same phone call 3-4 months in a row. Nextel at the time that I tried them was horrible but I have heard that they have made some great strides in the last few years. I have Sprint and for the money it is what I find to be the best deal going. In the area that I live they have excelect coverage and my bills are now a respectable 150-175 bucks a month. That is for 3500-4000 peak min a month!!!! Your best bet however is to make sure that what ever company you go with they allow you a 30 day no penalty back out with all your money back. Most will give this to you if you ask. Then you can try it out and see if it is good for you as we all use them different.

I've had good luck with Verizon. I travel around the country quite a bit and I've always had good reception with Verizon. No complaints at all.

Risk Taker 04-21-2003 03:22 PM

Verizon here.........only one dropped signal (Rye, New Hampsire - seacoast). Never, ever have had a problem otherwise....and I've been all over the country, big cities, small towns, boonies, etc.

Gizmo 04-21-2003 06:36 PM

I have had Verizon since the late 80's. It was GTE, back then. It wasn't the greatest when it was analog, but after going to digital, I have no complaints. I use my cell far more than the land line. I'll stick with them!!!!!

RacingFan4Ever 04-22-2003 01:25 AM

I use to have Verizon and had nothing but problems with them. As soon as my contract was up, I switched over to Sprint and I love it. I've had it for 6 months now, and no problems. My bill for the month is usually around $50.00. I get 300 minutes per month for the daytime, free long distance ( no matter the time I call), free night and weekends. I also have the PCS to PCS ( $5.00 per month) , and I can talk to any one who has this same service without any more charges. My husband has a Sprint phone and we talked over 1,000 minutes last month with no additional charges or used minutes. As far as roaming, I haven't experienced it yet, and my husband and I travel alot. I went to Vegas from Michigan, and had service all the way there. It was nice too cuz my kids were able to call me, and it was a local call for them, and it was free for me cuz it was the weekend. Oh yeah, I also have added long distance to Canada which is 3.00 more a month, and they charge me 10 cents/minute to canada.

I hope that helps a bit.

Wardey 04-22-2003 02:34 PM

I have had about all of them over the years but I think AT&T is the best so far. Nextel is prob second in line. Wardey

Smitty 04-22-2003 02:57 PM

Well it's looking like I need to call AT&T.

Iggy 04-23-2003 06:09 AM

I've had AT&T for 7 years with absolutely no complaints. Great customer service, large "home" area (the whole state of Florida) and if I was still traveling up and down the east coast they had a plan where all that too would've been just a "local" call.
My daughter has had Verizon, Sprint and now Singular. She is constantly complaining about poor service, double billing, outages, etc.

I did upgrade my phone , and found that made a difference:D

Iggy 04-23-2003 07:12 AM

BTW what ever you do, just don't get an Ericson phone.
I've had three of them and every one has been trouble. The first one had poor reception, second one died two days out of warrenty and Ericson wouldn't do anything about it "sorry, but it's out of warrenty, you'll have to buy a new one", third one died one week out of warrenty and I got the same story.
I didn't have the second and third Ericson phones in sucession, there was a Nokia in between that was stolen.
