Finally! After way too many weather delays, we finally made it to Bimini and Cat Cay. It was worth the wait. Water too beautiful for words. It's pretty awesome when you can see the bottom, in 100 feet of water!! The only downside - running back with 15 - 20 knots of wind out of the NE. (Are we having fun yet?)

How rough does it get? What size boat could you get away with Miami to Bimini

Payton 04-20-2003 05:59 PM

Sounds like you are having a great time!

If the poor little cuban kids can make it over on a tire, Im pretty sure you could do it in a big boat with a big motor ;)

florida gator 04-20-2003 06:36 PM

I have known of people to do it in fairly small boats. I am tempted to try it this summer in the 21' Donzi.

CAP071 04-20-2003 06:39 PM

WoW what a sweet run that would be.
Hey lets do an OSO Bimini run.

Oh nevermind I'm in Philadelphia pa. :D

cuda 04-20-2003 06:39 PM

I've heard stories of guys going over in big sportfishers and then the seas get too big for them to come back. They have to leave their boats and fly back, then go retrieve the boats later. I know a guy who went in his 24 foot World Cat. You just never know. We were talking about it yesterday, not a trip I really want to make, especially since I don't even like the Bahamas.

SummerObsession 04-20-2003 08:47 PM

That looks beautiful!1 My wife and I were discussing how much fun it would be to take our little Cig to the bahamas! We will get there someday!:D

Need to relocate to Florida soon! Looking now, maybe something will come up by next year!

Gordo 04-20-2003 09:04 PM

After riding over to the Bahamas in the OSO GMC Trucks/Cigarette Gladiator last year, I keep thinking I'd love to take the 25 Active Thunder across. In fact, I don't know the islands very well, but I would love to do a "group run" sometime.
That pic really makes me think of last years races.
GAWD I hate Kansas...

THRILLSEEKER 04-20-2003 09:22 PM

how far is it from mainland FL to Bimini? Also what all is there as far as entertainment?

HebertNecessity 04-20-2003 09:33 PM

Miami /Port Everglades is about 58 miles to bimini, the Florida Powerboat Club, has a poker run every year. They go to Bimini and end up in Paradise Island(Atlantis). One guy did the run in an Active 28' single, No Problems!!!

rtaylor 04-20-2003 09:38 PM

how do most people deal with engine failures, especially those with single engines? i understand aome of the tow companies come all the way out to get you. Are the fees crazy?

Gordo 04-20-2003 09:42 PM

Bimini only 58 miles?

We went from somewhere just north of Miami to Freeport Bahamas, and I thought it was somewhere around 70 miles?
Steve, (BoardGod), or Bill P, what did your GPS say??

BODYSHOT1 04-20-2003 09:45 PM

..that's something I definately want to do one day...must be an awesome ride!

Enjoy! :D

rtaylor 04-20-2003 09:49 PM

Anybody? What do you do when you break down half way?

R Addiction 04-20-2003 10:58 PM

He had an Active Thunder.....................nuff said!!!!!:p :D ;)

buckknekkid 04-21-2003 05:38 AM

Ya need 30 feet and an extra motor to get you home. I fish way out all the time and always feel comfortable in 4 to 6 with a 33 center console

THRILLSEEKER 04-21-2003 06:26 AM

when you guys make that trip do you have to deal with customs or anything?

THEJOKER 04-21-2003 07:32 AM

120 East...CAN'T MISS

Gordo:

We left out of Riveria Beach (W.Palm) and went 120 East. You'll run right into West End. Now that was some rough ass water- 10 -12's in the Gulfstream that day - BH

BH,

Heard you guys had a blast. Wish we could have made it. Hopefully this year!

LapseofReason 04-21-2003 07:59 AM

I have gone 4 time's to about ten of the island's, when anybody is ready to go give me a call and I'll tell you what the deal is and what I think. Remember gas is about $6.00 a gal. and looks like tea.

fandango 04-21-2003 09:21 AM

We took my 35 Cafe from Ft. Pierce all through the Abacos, Berry Islands, Bimini and back to Miami last Christmas with no problems (600 miles). You do have to wait for good weather for the crossings but once there weather doesn't play as much. Gas was 3.65 in Walkers Cay and 3.06 in Bimini. Boat US does do a patrol for the major crossing areas, but you have to be able to get in touch with them. Most cell phones only will get signal approx 10 miles off of Florida. Sat phones is best but expensive. Most people over there use a single side band radio for commuications.

Florida Powerboat Club is planning 2 trips to the Bahamas this summer. The Gulf is generally more calm in the summer months. We only recommend boats with 2 or more engines join us. It only takes us about 1 1/2 hour to get to where we clear customs and have a nice lunch. Then we continue on to our final destination.
I hope to have some OSO participation this year!!

Jackie,
I am glad to see you joined the board, Welcome! I had fun with you and Stew last week in Daytona. I am sure Stew has some good footage of us and Miss Nortech.

You might wish to check the new immigration rules. It is now the biggest pain imaginable to go thru whatever they call immigration now. You must present your crew at immigration in Miami at the port (can't go there by boat). and then do customs. I ain't going to the Bahamas by boat anytime soon.....

Horseplay 04-22-2003 01:45 PM

U.S. immigration wasn't a big issue. We cleared in Ft Lauderdale. While we did have to go to the office at Port Everglades, it only took about 2 minutes.

apache21 04-22-2003 09:42 PM

I have been to Chub Cay and it is beautiful. I boned fished for a week. And Stayed on my Father in-laws Bosses 135ft Hatteras.
It was nice, love to do it again.
