Again suggested by someone else... lines or ropes?

ChrisK 04-24-2003 01:14 PM

Actually... your wrong on that one!...

I have never skiied with a line... I have always skiied with a rope. ;)

Philip 04-24-2003 01:28 PM

:D Sounds line a real "line" to me:D

ChrisK 04-24-2003 02:30 PM

It might be a regional thing, but I am from NY we called them ski ropes there as well as here in FL. Who knows.....

GLH 04-24-2003 02:32 PM

Rope that's for sellboters

BLee 04-24-2003 02:38 PM

Lines, always lines. Ropes are for the bedroom.

HyperBaja 04-24-2003 03:08 PM

call them things "tie the thing in the back" "clip the thing in the front" "get the thing on the side?

riskybusiness 04-24-2003 03:08 PM

Farmers use ropes. Sailors use lines. (using "sailors" collectively)

WARPAINT 04-24-2003 03:41 PM

About 15 years ago i tied my wife to the sunpad of a chris craft stinger late at nite in a marina:eek: i used the lines that were on the boat.did they become rope when attached to her wrists?:D did she get rope burns or line burns:confused:

Bill272 04-24-2003 04:55 PM

It depends on where it is. A rope is a rope unless it's on a boat. Then it's always line.

T2x 04-24-2003 05:12 PM

O.D.R.F.'s (On Demand Restraint Facilitators) are a fixture on all modern day pleasure craft. Originally designed as woven hemp hausers, the design was completely updated in 1998 by Formulaic Marine, whose designers pioneered the C.C.O.I. technological breakthrough (Color Coordinated Optic Imagery). Since the addition of C.C.O.I. , Formulaic customers and ad agencies have reported speed increases of three to five MPH. Many professional power boat racers have reported even greater improvements because, in the words of one humble competitor: " We are the only one's skilled enough to really make these babies run".

I have a few dock lines, a couple of ski ropes and an anchor rope.

36spectre 04-24-2003 07:13 PM

T2x, I have found the same. my boat was 5mph faster with the colored lines.Otto

36spectre 04-24-2003 07:23 PM

I'm going to get 1-2 miles per more with the new monogramed lines next.Otto

My boat has ropes. It has a front, rear, left side, right side. I go to the front, sometimes I go to the back. I call people on the radio. I keep the bumpers under the seat. Just tell me to toss you the line that holds it centered while in the slip.

Port, starboard, aft, fore, hail, lines, fenders, spring lines are terms that do not get a response, or at least a useful one while in my boat. :p K.I.S.S.

Gizmo 04-24-2003 08:45 PM

Lines, Lines everwhere Lines. I only have lines on my tub!! ;) :D :D

mcollinstn 04-24-2003 08:52 PM

I have lines to tie up with.
I have a ski rope.
I have 250 feet of rode my anchor is on.

I put bumpers between the boat and whatever it is tied up to (with lines). The bumpers are also on lines.

I pull my jetskis behind the boat with rope. If I use the same rope to tie the jetski up to something it becomes a line.

Philip 04-24-2003 09:44 PM

I have lines to tie up with.
mcollinstn You have put way too much thought into this, BTW if I was going to water Ski, I would be using a Ski Rope. Anchor, what is a Anchor???? Is that one of those pointy things the marine police always check you for??? I don't have one of those things, they only slow you down, too heavy, and besides if I had one I don't think it would be too smart if I rode it! I like Otto's explanation, the monogram lines are faster, and every women needs those $300. books, or was that Boots?

Since my dad was a career Navy man, we've lived with nautical terms our whole lives. We didn't have walls, we had bulkheads. No ceiling, but we had the overhead. Never had to sweep the floor, but we had to police the deck. We never put things away, but were told to secure our toys. I guarantee you that my sisters could point you to the head before they were five years old. We had to perfect the "five quart shower". To this day, he won't flush the head if he only pisses in it, that's made mom real happy over the last 52 years.:)
Another of his pet peeves is to leave a piece of line hanging out of a knot, he calls those "Irish Pennants".:D
If we were making too much noise, he'd say we were "louder than a drunk bosun mate".
And if you were blocking his way we were "standing in the hatchway like a marine".
We weren't told to get out of his way, we were told to "make a hole".
The kids in the neighborhood thought we were speaking a different language.

It's not $300 boots,

In response to Phillip's request:

In 1985 at the Freeport, NY National Offshore event...........

A maroon 41' Apache enters the State Marina(Wet pits).....Big block engines idling at a low roar.

On board are a group of individuals from Brooklyn...........

These individuals are all resplendent in silk shirts, tailored pants, Italian loafers, butter soft fitted leather jackets, accessorised with ample jewelry and cologne.

As the bow of the boat approaches the twin tie off pilings (backwards). One of the individuals, with stylishly coifed blown dry hair, gingerly walks out on the deck holding what appeared to be a 75 foot nylon anchor line in his hands.

At the same time another individual on the dock, who had been waiting for this "crew", began yelling loudly....... "Joey- Joey...... tro me da string ...... tro me da string.....Joey---Jo-EEEE". Simultaneously, the gentleman at the helm.....stylishly coiffed with steel grey hair......began urging in unison "yeah...tro vinnie da string...tro him da string".........

The individual on the bow of the Apache..... whose name apparently was Joey...reared back and threw the entire length of "string"......... with neither end secured to anything....... almost to the shore, ......but,......... unfortunately it didn't quite make it and fell helplessly into the "waddah"....

At that precise moment, Joey fell down on the slick Apache deck.......

Following this is what I refer to as the "get da pole wid da hook...stupid" story.

You can't make this stuff up.

The sad fact is.......................... if the " newbie ol' boys" told you this......... you'd probably believe it.

EXACTLY !!

Philip 04-25-2003 08:30 AM

I Still Laugh over that!!!

Thank you T2x. That occurred 18 years ago, and still till this day whenever I am pulling into a dock, and someone standing there, (trying to be helpful) says either, throw me the line, rope, string or whatever, i bust out laughing, so people, please stop thinking I am laughing at you. That statement conjures up the image that T2x just described. BTW who (other then T2x, Tony Caligurie, or myself can tell me which boat they were on?) Why Mr Caligurie? While I was waiting to get craned out of the water (there is always quite a long line of Race Boats waiting at he cranes,) A Argument ensued pertaining to who truly won in that class, and after quite a few threats, the trophy was given up, and the turn buoy the guys on the Apache apparently missed was in the wrong position on that lap.. :D T2x, BTW if I remember correctly, everyone's name on board the Apache was Joey, except ?? T2x is right, you can't make this stuff up! One more thing, I think running the NYC Poker run is a thing of the past, at least for T2x, Me, I will say I'm sorry, get a"Pass" and maybe run.

Anonymous:D :D

Philip 04-25-2003 09:02 AM

Once again, I beg T2x, write the book.

You can't make this stuff up! It might almost be time to write the book, "The Characters of Offshore" This book can be split into chapters, by ? Nationality? Country of origin? Geographical Residence? I am sure T2x can come up with something. I like to add, I am glad I don't fit into any of his categories.

WES311SR1 04-25-2003 09:10 AM

a rope is only a line when in use .

T2x 04-25-2003 09:37 AM

Phillip:

Now, you're confusing me..........

The Apache I referred to was a pleasure boat...not a race hull.

But, they were definitely Apache race "fans".

MitchStellin 04-25-2003 02:40 PM

From a sailor (cough) at heart it is a line. From a skier at heart it is a tow rope. Milk....Melk....Napkin....Nafkin....there are times when both apply even on a vessel....boat....:D

R Addiction 04-25-2003 02:52 PM

Did somebody say LINES!!????:puppy:

FFO 05-01-2003 02:09 PM

I call them Dock lines and anchor line . But for skiing they call them ski ropes .

RUSSSR1 05-01-2003 02:09 PM

You don't cast a rope, you cast a line. If it's on a boat it's a line.

FFO 05-01-2003 02:17 PM

do you throw a ski line or cast a ski line. so when your on a boat do you cast or throw . I throw my anchor .

TEAMBAJA 05-02-2003 08:23 AM

Arent there any NAVY guys here? Oh wait, they probably just use big freakin chains for everything!
