Looking For New Excursion
Anyone know where I might find a new dark blue Excursion with the 7.3 Diesel? I can't locate one anywhere around here.
 |
Look at the dealers in Colorado, such as Phil Long Ford, Burt Ford, O'Meara Ford. They all have web sites. More diesel Excursions are sold out here than anywhere else. Prices are probably much better than the East. All the ones out here are going to be four wheel drive, and you would not want anything less. I bought my 2002 Excursion Limited with the Powerstroke from Phil Long last summer for about $43K. It has all the options. They are a good dealer as far as car dealers go. Bob.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out.

Phantom,
I've heard the same thing from others. I was just thinking the 7.3 would be sufficient and you get a $3K rebate with it. I don't tow my boat a lot and probably won't keep it over 100,000 miles. Do you think I would be making a mistake with the 7.3? |
As far as the 7.3 goes, it is a well proven power plant. When you add a K&N intake "system" and a Super Chips computer reprogramming, the new engine can not match it. I have 19,000 miles on my 02 7.3 Excursion in nine months. Too many hunting trips. As always, even with technology, there is no substitute for cubic inches. I live at 8,000' above sea level, and real power shows up here. I get 16 + mpg at 80 miles per hour on the interstates at 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Of course I do not know if Ford is shipping any new Excursions with the 7.3 anymore.
|
I'm not sure.........it's new technology. You start to make changes, and add a chip, the 7.3 will beat the 6.0, but it will also void your warranty..........and I like warranties!:D
|
Thanks again for all your help. I don't think Ford is shipping the 7.3's anymore. That's why I'm having a difficult time locating one.
I know exactly what you mean about the warranty. The 5 year 100K warranty is definitely a plus to the diesel. |

Nort, it has not voided my warranty as far as the dealer is concerned, yet. I had an O-ring goe bad on an oil line, lost three quarts out of fifteen, and they happily replaced it. I am towing a 35' Cigarette, and with the abscence of O2 up here, the engine actually works more easily with the fairly mild re-programming. I would recommend the K&N intake system to anyone. You can literally feel the increased power from the freer flowing intake air. I am looking forward to driving mine at sea level some day. Honestly, the acceleration is like a 737-700 taking off, and the pull does not stop. You are pushed back into your seat until you let up on the pedal. I have not driven an Excursion with the new diesel yet, but I will when it comes time before the end of the run to decide on keeping mine or getting the newer power plant in an 04. I would bet that I keep mine though. Damn Havasu looked nice by the way. Bob.

Worse case, with the Super Chips computer you simply unprogram the vehicle computer through the diagnostic port on the dash with the handheld computer. Takes less than ten minutes either way, and the original factory settings are restored. This is not like a chip replacement where you have to manually remove the computer to switch chips, and the factory seal on the factory chip is long gone.
I still think that you can find new 7.3s in stock out here. |
I have found a couple. Not very many. I can't find dark blue anywhere. It looks as though I will be going with white again. I was getting a little tired of white but oh well... I found a pretty sweet white Eddie Bauer in TN.

Thanks for your help Semper Fi. I'll check it out.
BTW, are you stationed at Camp Pendleton? |

I think the new 6.0/ tranny package is better than the older 7.3 litre. Don't let a dealer B.S. you about the $2K rebate for the 6.0. I have a'99 F-350 with the 7.3 and it has been a great truck---and it has the K&N filter, a diablo chip and the 4" exhaust. These upgrades do make a big difference, but, the 6.0 is a better package. I like the new package so much that I'm ordering a new Excursion with the 6.0. I was staioned at Camp pendleton, from 1990-1997. BTW, I really like the 388 Slingshot!! Sweet boat |
Semper Fi,
Thanks again for your help. I'm leaning more toward the 7.3 right now. The dealers seem more anxious to deal on them. I really don't tow the boat a whole lot. I leave it on a lift in the marina. Thanks for the compliment on the boat. I really like it. I was in the Air Force and stationed at Fort Bragg. I played rugby for Bragg and we used to battle you guys every year at Nationals. The top three military teams were always Pendleton, Bragg, and Legeune (not necessarily in that order). Do you have a boat out there? |
Go to Click Here They have A-PLAN pricing for employees/retirees on their site. Armed with this info maybe you can get a sweeter deal GOOD LUCK

I'll check it out.
Thanks for your help. |
388Hustler,
I really think you would like the 6.0 if you got it. Not only is the motor better, but the tranny is alot better also. The only reason the dealer is so "anxious" to sell you the 7.3 is because everyone wants the newer 6.0. Either way, you will get an awesome truck. I sold my Warlock about a year ago and I'm saving for a Slingshot--love that boat!! I'm just curious, can you post a pic of yours on this post? Good luck either truck you buy. |
That's a good one Troutly. That plant is only 10 minutes from my house.
:D |
Semper Fi,
Thanks for your help. Here's a picture of my boat taken back in the winter. I have some in-water pics on my other computer. I will transfer them and post them later. It won't let me post the picture... It says the file is too large. Any idea if/how to reduce the size of it? If not, send my your e-mail and I will send it to you. |
We just bought a new Excursion with the 6.0 and like Semper Fi said the motor and new 5 speed auto are much better than the 7.3 IMO. I had a 99 F-250 and a 02 F-350 with the 7.3 and I like the new motor much better.
We towed our Cig with it last weekend to Havasu (300 miles) and the thing had power to spare. It felt liked a chipped 7.3 but with a much better tranny. The tow haul mode works really well also and will actually downshift going down hills when you start to brake. The suspension could use some bags and sway bars though to stiffen it up a bit. With a lighter load it would probably be ok, but you Hustler is probably close to our TG. Good luck. |
Havasu Cig -
Thanks for the info. I'm comparing everything and will probably purchase in the next day or two. |

I drove HavasuCig's (and Mrs. HavasuCig's) new Excursion 6.0 and liked it so much, I had to get one for myself!! you can email me a pics to: [email protected] Thanks!! |
If anyone is interested I have a 2001 Excursion Limited fully equipped with the 7.3L Powerstroke for sale. It is an awesome machine. I've only used it as a family vehicle and it has 30,000 miles on it none of it towing and most of it was highway trip miles. It gets 23 MPG on the road and 18 MPG around town if driven sensibly. Just can't afford to keep an extra vehicle that is not being used. Color is Burgandy with saddle leather interior.
|
HelmPilot:
I am absolutely flabergasted. I get 14.5 mpg on the highway. Please tell me what you are doing to get 23 !!!!! Tom |
I own a 2000 PSD Excursion and have put over 30K miles on it- also know a lot of others with 7.3 PSD X's, and frequent the dieselstop website with regularity.
I have not, nor do I know anyone, or read about anyone that is getting 20 mpg with this 4 ton behemoth regardless of how or where it is driven (until now). Close, maybe, but not 20, even with a lot of mods. Driven at 75+ on the highway, no headwind, and flat ground, will net me 16.5 + or - , and maybe 12 pulling a 28' Active Thunder. It's got the power for sure (it's a better tow vehicle than the F250 V-10 I had), but it's never going to see those mileage numbers!   |
Just wanted to let you guys know that I bought a 2003 Excursion with the 7.3 diesel. It's a white Eddie Bauer model. I like it a lot so far. As for the mileage, it appears to get about 17 or so on the highway and about 14 around town (if the computerized mileage readings are accurate).
Semper Fi - I e-mailed a pic of my Hustler to you. Later |
388 Hustler,
Congrats on the truck. I did get your email with the picture of your Slingshot and its a beautiful boat!!!---Thanks for sending the picture. I just took delivery of my new 2003 Limited Excusion (6.0 PSD) on Friday and I absolutely LOVE it!! |
Semper Fi,
Congrats to you on your new purchase as well. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for the compliment on my boat. Let me know when you get in the market for a Hustler and I will try to help you out, if I can. |
