Sail Boaters VS Power Boaters

I was wondering If sail boaters in your area hate power boaters. Sail boaters always give me dirty look's .

CigDaze 05-02-2003 02:33 PM

You're certainly not the only one.
It's a lot like that here. They tend to wave back the least out of any other group that I encounter. Most times, I too get the dirty stare down. There are a small number of sailers that are okay, though. Once in a while, I get to talking to a sailboater and they seem genuinely intrigued in our boats and are nice people. Likewise, given the benefit of the doubt, I give them a certain respect for what the enjoy takes great skill and knowhow.

A lot of times, however sad, most do seem to turn their chin up and not bother acknowledging you.

I wave to a lot of sail boats and they ususally wave back. Some don't but who cares. Most are pretty friendly on the Sound, after all, we all share the same passion for the water.

mopower 05-02-2003 03:38 PM

The ones that don't wave back are just pi$$ed because they can't go as fast as us:p .

Seriously though , I usually try to give them enough room as possible...almost out of waving distance anyway:rolleyes:

Mr. Demeanor 05-02-2003 03:58 PM

They should wave. The quicker we burn through our fossil fuels, the sooner their boats will appreciate in value.

Clay Washington 05-02-2003 04:10 PM

Maybe they are upset because you "cut them off". Blow Boaters have the right-of-way on the water. Just steer clear of them and they won't care about you.

FWIW, we have a friend with a 45-foot Hunter on Lake Travis. It takes a while (at 1 knot) to get to party cove, but we are partying all the way there! :D

McGary911 05-02-2003 04:37 PM

I usually give them as much room as i can, so i cant tell whether theyre waving with a hand or a finger..... :D

I try to give them as much respect as i expect from them. I grew up with tons of sailboaters, and theyre mostly decent people.

2 summers ago one of the local yacht clubs set up a regazza right in front of the Brielle bridge over the Manaqsquan river on one of the most crowded weekends i can remember. This is one of the busiest inlets on the east coast, top of the inland waterway and all. Power boats were literally crashing into each other to avoid them. All power boaters got dirty looks that day. We realize that they have the right of way, but what kind of ass sets up a course that crosses this busiest of channels on 2 of its legs.......

cig1988 05-03-2003 04:42 AM

It really irks me when they purposely are on the wrong side of the channel expecting "us" to get out of the way when thier sails are down using kicker power. I respect anybodys wishes on peace and quiet but when your trying to sleep at night and hear that fustrating "clank clank" noise from thier lines hitting the mast repeatedly, that really pisses me off!

I wouldn't mind them at all if they would only stop trying to make everything a no wake zone...

GO4BROKE 05-03-2003 06:15 AM

cig 1988, I agree, they are loud at night, we are loud during the day.
If they are running an engine, even with the sails up, they are a power boat and no longer haver the right of way.

Clay Washington 05-03-2003 07:40 AM

It could be my lack of blue blazer with an ascot.......
LMAO @ TooOld! :D

R Addiction 05-03-2003 07:40 AM

In the Chesapeake Bay, they tend to be an arrogant bunch. I don't wave, give them plenty of room, and if the rag is down you're fair game :p .

GLH 05-03-2003 07:58 AM

F-Them and the dog they ride on.

wilerty 05-03-2003 08:40 AM

Having owned both at about the 30' range, I would say the problems I had with power boats were not speed or sound. The problems were the waves created and particularly the powerboaters not giving enough room or causing me to have to come about when I didn't have to. It's hard to do anything fast on a sailboat ... give then as much room as possible. Although we might consider a cruisers large wake an "opportunity", it is a nightmare to a sailboat.

frequentflyer 05-03-2003 11:38 AM

I've noticed the same thing. I try to stay clear of them as much as I can just not to be an A-hole. But they have that preception of us because of a few guys (which I have seen) that will blow by an anchored sailboat at 80 MPH. I mean really close. Scares the sh*t out of them. It's just like the situation with Personal Water Craft. A few guys have ruined it for all of us here in So Fla. Biscayne National Park has officially banned PWC. On the other hand I can't imagine what kind of person would be on a boat at the mercy of wind with a top speed of 5 MPH at best. Hey... maybe they are the Save the Manatee foundation !!

Allan4 05-03-2003 11:49 AM

I do quite a bit of sailing as well, actually, a little racing too. I can see the bad image they get though, but some of the guys that my Dad has been sailing with for years and years always ask me for rides in my 75mph24 OUtlaw as well. They love it. Just a matter of who you are around. They love the water as much or more than powerboaters, so anything on the water is usually really cool to them. Certainly have your a-holes though, but so do us powerboaters.

Really the only thing that pisses me off if I am sailing is if I get buzzed....and that could be by a pontoon or a powerboat, makes no difference. You ability to manuever is handicapped, part of the challenge.

Knock it all you want, but I gaurantee if I took you out on a Hobie Cat in 20 knot winds you would absolutely love it. Also, it makes you learn to read the water very well and understand some of the maritime procedures.

Just stay away from them and all will be well.

Hide the toilet paper when the Blow Boters show up. they are really handicapped and pissed at the world because of it.

Jeff 05-03-2003 12:35 PM

when I think of sailboaters the phrase,"hey you scratched my anchor" comes to mind:D

pullmytrigger 05-03-2003 11:18 PM

A friend of mine who has worked in several marinias on Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands says the sailboaters are notoriously cheap, goes on about how they think "The wind is free and everything should be too......" he much prefers the powerboaters........I give them as much room as I can...but I do that for everybody.
Wilerty: why is a wave (or wake) such a disaster?

Cause they are afraid they may spill their Martini...

cig1988 05-04-2003 05:50 AM

Twin 29 is absolutely correct. I've heard that from more than 1 person employed/owned marinas. As a matter of fact I've heard at 1 marina I was staying a transient sail boated was caught trying to steal a garden hose form a resident. How low is that?

GO4BROKE 05-04-2003 06:44 AM

If you are too cheap to pay for motors and gas, you certianly won't want to pay for anything else!
