What's this GPS worth?
I'm an idiot when it comes to GPS. Never owned or operated one in my life. Would like to have something for the boat mainly. What is this one worth? Will it be ok for the boat? What else will I need to buy?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=34289 Or would this one be a better deal for me? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=34289 Thanks all. Buck |
They both have small screens, and are geared for streets, not boating. You need a bigger display when boating.

Garmin 182s, better than homemade soup.

I started out with the GPS III+
It did everything I needed, both on land and water. Great because of the small size, especialy if room is of conscern or more of a toy. :) But as Nort said, small screen. Makes it harder to navigate. I now have the 162. 20x better. Love it. |
I have the V and love it but a bigger screen is still a better option

A GPS is worthless! I like my speedo MUCH better! :D

K...advice taken. I'll keep looking elsewhere.
Thanks all for the input! Buck |

At the very minimum, In my opinion, don't get less than the Garmin 176 or 176c Chatplotter. There is a bigger screen and a lot more features. The 182 is even better.

I have been very pleased with my Garmin 182 and with the Blue Chart maps.

Hey Clay, are you just mad at the GPS because it reads 10 mph slower than your speedo.:D :D :D
I have the Garmin III+ and it was to small, it now stay's in the truck 99% of the time the boat got the Garmin 215 very happy with it. |

I'm on a psuedo budget - self imposed, economy looks hopeful though. I just bought a Standard Horizon CP150 Chart with the chip. It was 350 + 190 for the wide chip. Plugs right into my radio. Decent price for the features. A Garmin is nice but it's almost 1 grand.

IF YOU WOULD STOP leaving your Bumpers out you could go a lot faster :D

I've done quite a bit of looking and reading and have found that the Garmin 176 was a tad small. A 5" screen would be the way to go. All the decent ones need chips to get the real details your looking for so don't get caught up in the names and features of expensive models when they all run pretty much the same chips with the same detail. Garmin uses its own BLUECHART CARTOGRAPHY, the rest split between NAVIONICS and C-MAP NT. I have been told for our type of boating that NAVIONICS will give better detail. Not sure if thats true or not. I went with the EAGLE 320 INTELLIMAP. All the bells and whistles of the other black and white units but with 320+320 resolution, Navionics or Cd down loadable and you can also use a memory card to prechart your course or record your trip and only 349.99.
