I most frequently refer to them as "The Motors". Besides, if its good enough for General Motors, and The Ford Motor Company its good enough for me.

Starter motor - definitly not a starter engine
Wiper motor - definitly not a wiper engine

Hmmmm Motor or Engine powering a boat?
How about powertrain that covers both right?

In our business, we also deal
with hydraulic motors ( hydrostatic)

My definitions: Motor, powered by an
outside energy soure, ( electric, hydraulic,
pneumatic, etc ) that converts it to a
mechanical output.

Engine: Takes fuel sources, and converts
them to a mechanical output, or in the case
of a jet, or rocket, thrust.

I remember reading a letter in Hot Rod Mag, sometime around 1984. A reader had written them a long long letter castigating them for always refering to those V-8s as "motors". He included many of the definitions that are spoken of here. Letter was about 6 paragraphs.

Hot rods 1 sentence response: I thought that was pretty damn funny.

And i have NO idea why i still remember it:)

But why is an outboard refered to as an outboard motor? no one ever says outboard engine.
