My old boat was a '96 Thoroughbred Velocity 26 or 280 now - my question is the T-Bred seem to be quite bit faster compared to a 2000 280 Which my buddy just purchased -is there a difference in the layup? -when floating/rafting next to the 2000 my boat was a couple more inches out of the water (could see the top of the drive) the 2000 seems more solid compared to the '96 - We were out on the 2000 last night (502MPI) with max speed a disappointing 65mph - (66 one time)GPS - had trouble passing a 25 outlaw with 385mag. what gives??? he purchased the boat because I bragged how fast my Thoroughbred was. In 1996 the company was named Thoroughbred and the boat models were Velocity. Then he changed the company name to Velocity and later Initial Marine. When I have mine built in 1996, he offered an option for a race layup, those boats kept the Thoroughbred name, not Velocity. I stripped the Thoroughbred off mine and replaced it with Velocity.
The difference in speeds is merely how well the bottom was done on the boat. Take the boat and have the bottom blue printed.

What speed should one expect - fresh water - 502/415 w/imco exaust - turning a 28 Bravo tach says 5000 -5050 can't be right speedo 74-75 GPS reading 65 - can he expect any more??? over proped??

Ran-Dom 32, Several quick ways to tell the difference between a Thoroughbred and a Velocity.

I was told that Velocity sold the the name to Regal . Then they didn't like what Regal were doing with the boat . So he started his own comp. it was Thoroughbred Power Boat's . Until he could get the name back. Ran-Dom 32 I have a 26 thoroughbred 1994 The best speed on GPS was 67.6 the boat has 454 Mag 24 pitch hydo.

What is the dry weight of your boat?

I guess I'm having a tough time seeing a boat of that size with that power running in the low to mid 70s.

I'm running the same size boat with the same power, just don't expect it to happen in mine.

My 96 ran 66 MPH with a 454 carbed Mag. With the 502 I was well into the 70's. These things fly! I did see a test in PB that had a 1999 or 2000 w/ a 502 Mag EFI running 67.???. I thought the driver must have been a dumbass, maybe they did change something. I know the newer ones have coring up the sides whereas the older ones didn't.

You should expect about 63 to 64 out of a 26 with a 454/300 if the hull is true and the drive height is set up correctly. Mine ran 63.4 on GPS consistently with a hydromotive 24 pitch prop. I then changed over to a 750hp blower motor with a 28 pitch hydromotive prop and ran in the low 90's. The boats are capable of 100mph with about 800hp and the correct drive height and prop size.

2000 was the year they ungraded the quality of the interior of the 280 which I beleave added a little weight. My 2000 280 with a 502/415 with a 26 Hydromotive did 69mph gps.

Something doesn't sound right ... I don't think a 502/415 can turn a 28"Bravo properly. I only turned a 30" Bravo when I Whippled my 502.

Same here with my 1998, 280. With the stock 502 mag I could get 69 / 70. Added Lightning headers, reprogrammed the ECU, k&N air cleaner and labbed the prop. Now it is 72/73 with a light load and some chop.
