What does "brand new" mean to u?

When buying items from individuals,I have found that each persons definition of "brand new" is different.
"Brand new" to me is never used. Not "only installed once",not "2 hrs on it",not "2 outings on it",not "testing time only",and not "break in time only."
Am I out in left field here-what do you think?

ck54 05-14-2003 06:11 AM

I agree with you! "New mean NEW!" New in box, Unopened.
Zero hrs.
It never ceases to amaze me how far this industry will stretch "new", ie 2year old boat with 75hrs, "Brand New"!
In that case I'm 25 years old.
Another issue is hour meters meters and MSO's. I heard one the other day, "the guy left the inigition on."

Agreed, brand new is never used, no time on it, usually in original unopened box, period

bikinilover 05-14-2003 06:38 AM

I know a guy who bought a brand new boat from a dealer, it had 125 hrs on it. They said it was all demo hrs.

Cord 05-14-2003 06:46 AM

I think that an item can be new and not in a box. I also feel that it can be installed and removed and still be new. It's once it's been used or seen any wear that it is no longer new. ie-a gauge is still new as long as it hasn't seen any electrons, the installation didn't damage it, or it hasn't been sun faded while installed. Of course if the gauge sun fades on the shelf in the box, it could still be considered new.

Coddigtion 05-14-2003 06:52 AM

I am with you all the way, a dealer on grand lake had about 75 hours and said the boat was new. I was like this boat is used and should bring a used price. But they are going to get someone that doesn't check it out and sell them a used boat for a new price.

Steve_H 05-14-2003 07:12 AM

you mean 200 hours isnt new?

Airpacker 05-14-2003 07:20 AM

New means New,not Used, not Tried once but it doesn't mean Good. It can be New and still no dam good!!

jafo 05-14-2003 07:25 AM

So what does 'better than new condition' mean? Huh? Huh? Inquiring minds want to know!!! :D :p

Brand New, No Box= Self Explanatory

Brand New, mounted but never used= again, self explanatory

If you're selling, an honest, detailed description will prevent a misunderstanding. If I sell something, I tell the buyer if it's not what they expected, send it back for a full refund.

Simple. [at least to me]

EXACTLY!!!:)

Sydwayz 05-14-2003 08:15 AM

So I can install a bilge pump, wire it, screw it down, and everything, never turn it on, clip the wires all the way to 2.5 inches long for install, and still pull it out and sell it as new?

New is fricking new. Out of box a box ok, but if it does not look like it was JUST LIFTED out of the styrofoam, it is used.

New demo is boat/car or whatever that comes with full warranty of one that was not a demo.

Lucididee 05-14-2003 08:39 AM

New means "NEW." Never Used! Not almost new and used once.

C M R 05-14-2003 08:48 AM

New is ban spanking new still in the box never opened!

Audiofn 05-14-2003 09:26 AM

Better then new is TooOlds, Cords, and my boats :D:D:D if we ever get them done  :D

This is what I experience in my industry. If I want to sell as new it has to be sealed in the box. Seals broken the customer is shown. We take all equipment out of the box and set up systems in our shop to programming, so some times the customer never sees any of this. Anything less then that is ripping your customer off!!!! If a product has ever been installed even if it has not seen power then the customer is informed and they can decide if they want new in the box or the new installed but never run (some times they will take it because there are no others available but they make the decision). It never stops amazing me the way that people stretch the trueth with what they are selling.

So then when you buy a 'new'car from the dealership and it has 7 miles on it, still not brand new?
'Brand new' to me, means more like it was JUST made, but could have been used before, and NO ONE has owned it!

Cord 05-14-2003 12:17 PM

What you're mouth Jon! My boat has one hour on it, therefore it can't be new. :D

In the above case with the dealer, he may be refering to the boat as being "new" if it hasn't been titled. Admitedly, 75 hours is stretch on that. For example, a car maybe sold as new, even though it has 4,900 miles on it-provided that it has never been titled. That's why dealers allow their sales people to drive the cars. It doesn't affect their value!

elimin 05-14-2003 12:40 PM

Ok,im not going crazy,my definition of brand new is the same as the majority OSO.
Brand new-still in box as received by the manufacturer.
This isnt hard to comprehend.
Thanks for helping me keep my sanity.

HiPerf2000 05-14-2003 01:23 PM

elimin.....

So tell us what happened?

What did you receive that wasn't so "NEW".....and from whom?

Lake Front 05-14-2003 02:43 PM

What is new and what is not new is an easy answer (at least to the honest people).

The bigger question is what defines "Like New" This is the biggest swing of opinions that I have ever seen (or at least where you catch the biggest liars). I have seen both boats and cars advertised as like new that I would consider significantly abused. Then when you approach these people they think you are unrealistic, and state that it is only normal wear and tear.

Quite frankly, I believe that why quite a few people do not get return or follow-up calls on their boats that are for sale. They state the condition as like new and excellent, and then potential buyers are disappointed upon viewing. Instead of being rude (like the person that missadvetised the condition) they just never follow-up. Or they show up early to look at the boat (that way you can see if the owner is making last minute adjustments to hide something), and can blantantly see the condition is not as stated, and they just leave before meeting with the owner.

I have used the term "better than new" when selling an item to clarify that the item is actually like new (or better), and not like other peoples version of what is like new. In other words showroom condition spotless (not out in the lot where 50 people have gotten in and out of the boat in their dirty shoes over the weekend . . . . but that is a whole other situation with a "new" boat.

Interceptor 05-14-2003 03:00 PM

There is new and everything else. Unfortunately the term buyer beware can be associated with both.

jdnca1 05-14-2003 03:08 PM

Is a "NEW" motor thats been dyno'd to confirm power and set the rings NEW? If not, there are a lot of high dollar used motors being bought from the "high end" builders. ;)   Like others have stated, its all subjective so buyer beware.

RebarBox 05-14-2003 04:33 PM

So is it 'New' if it has zero hours but has been sitting on the dealers lot for the last two years, with no cover, plastic or anything; with a foot of snow on it from Dec. thru late Feb.

That what a lot of dealers do in this area and advertize the same boat and 'New' each spring.

I think I would rather have the 'New' boat with 75 hrs and covered!

otis311 05-14-2003 07:44 PM

Brand new to me in boat talk means

BIG PAYMENTS $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$4$$
