Do people actually do this?

Was reading a reply on another boating forum. (non performance boaters) The original poster had purchased a new boat and had a question about continued use of Synthetic Oil like the manual recommended. Someone replied, "It wouldn't hurt since you only change your oil once a year anyway". What the hell is that about. Was he serious? Do people actually run their boat that long without an oil change?

I use to work at a Gm dealership and everynow and than a customer would come in with say 30,000miles with the original oil filter still on the truck! :D

Buck, it is feasable that some people might only change theirs once a year. MANY people up this way only put 50 hours on their boats a year. Remember, short season. I change mine a lot more often than that, but on many smaller boats or cruisers where the motors aren't run hard like ours are, 50 hours might not be that bad.

I only change mine once a year and it still comes out golden.

Maybe I'm just being anal retentive?

On my first boat that had a 350 mag in, I would put about 80 hrs a year on it and only changed the oil at winterization.
Second boat with 454 mag, I would change it once about halfway through the season.
Current boat with 525SC, I run full synthetic, and change it every 25-30 hrs.

Raypanic 05-19-2003 06:10 AM

I change mine 2 times / year usually I get about 50 hour on each boat though.

HyperBaja 05-19-2003 07:23 AM

Well over 100 hours, change every spring. As for running hard? Never, I only run WFO for 4 miles at a time.

Chris288 05-19-2003 08:14 AM

I use my boat 6 months out of the year put about 75 hours on it and change once a year right before winterization.

R Addiction 05-19-2003 09:51 AM

Change mine at least 2-3 times a season. (50-70hrs.) It's cheap insurance plus it gives me a piece of mind!

The drive oil gets changed 2 times a season also. Once again cheap insurance.;)

wwwTOPDJcom 05-19-2003 09:58 AM

change ever 30 hours or 1 once a season which ever is less
Mobile 1 motor oil , and pennzoil synth marine drive lube
check both drive and motor oil after each use

I dont see how you could go that long with a big block, but our 4.3 is at 1500 hours, 1 sinking, valve stem seal finally started to go this year, so its not like it has been unreliable at all.

jafo 05-19-2003 03:24 PM

Fifty hours, (or once a season for us northern boaters) is well within reason. Normal oil change interval on recip aircraft engines is 50 (dino oil), and the turbines are run upwards to 1500 hours or more on their synthetics before changing, and the temps on both types are higher than you will ever see in your boat.
Changing it more often in your boat or car may give you that warm fuzzy, but it really isn't necessary, and in some extreme cases is a waste of money, time, and resources. Their is almost NO chance that oil type, mfg., or cleanliness will be the DIRECT fault of your boat engine failure if you are following either mfg. recommendations, or just plain common sense.

mopower 05-19-2003 08:51 PM

Once a year at winterization 50/60 hour. Last motors had 730 hours when replaced for "mopower" and ran like new 1989/330/454. New 540's will probably get changed twice a year. Already did one with 1.7 hrs when I blew and oil line:mad:

Ya with 0 hours per year I guess the oil can go a long time :D

Allan4 05-19-2003 10:40 PM

I change about every 20-25 hours.....Oil is cheap, engines are not. It comes out dark everytime. In my ski boat it gets it one time per year, but only gets about 30 hours or so a season.
