"Bashing"...What the heck does it mean?

There is a new defensive technique in debate involving the claim that an opponent is "bashing" you or your associate or associated interest. This is generally based on some unwritten PC rule that bashing is a bad and unfair thing and , therefore, is not an accepted form of communication. This accusation is similar to being branded a fascist, or a rascist, or anti-something or other.

I agree that "label libeling" or perjoratives (be they gender, racial, religious or sexual persuasion based) are not acceptable under any circumstances (I.E. "The dirty so and so").....However, recently some honest questions and critiques have been labeled "bashing"..... If you follow the history of propagandist movements, creative manipulation of conversation, speeches and print media have been part and parcel of their efforts. Look no further than the Clintons or Al "Sharpie" Sharpton for examples of this in present day politics ("It all depends on what your definition of "is" is....."). Another useful technique is to create a lie loudly and then have a bunch of sycophants trumpet the same nonsense seemingly in unison. (I.E. "That's bashing!"..... "Yeah I think that's bashing too!"..."Me too"...."Me Three"...."Me Four"...etc etc, ) The result of this is follow up efforts to wit: " A lot of people are saying that you bashed so and so....not me particularly...but a lot of people".... Smarmy reporters use this all the time.........

I wonder if it ever happens here on OSO?;)

T2x............ humbly offering something to think about

CigDaze 05-23-2003 12:45 PM

Quit bashing OSO, T2x!!!

In all seriousness, it can get a little silly sometimes...Constructive criticism or a negative opinion isn't bashing! But to some it is!

When someone repeatedly spouts the same negative tirade directed at a single entitity(person or company, etc.), that's bashing.

Than again, I always thought a baseball bat to the head was bashing....

Bash away...;)

audacity 05-23-2003 12:47 PM

sweet!!! my very own personal thread just for me! :D

Sean 05-23-2003 12:49 PM

Rich,

you need to get that skater in the water and go for a blast man...

funny stuff!!

:D :D

cuda 05-23-2003 12:49 PM

I consider it bashing when there are unsubstantiated accusations, or criticisms. If a person can back up their claim, it's not bashing, just a fact. Of course once the horse has been killed, their is no reason to keep beating it.

Pete B 05-23-2003 12:53 PM

Joey,
see all the positive energy you release, people are talkin about you man, youve made it to the big time , i know you explained the name audacity but is that a self proclaimed name?? i am afaid if it is, it will have to change!, the power of the board may have to give you another! you know what happen to Randy!!

Shane 05-23-2003 12:57 PM

Bashing: The opportunity for Fred Cecil to relaease the creative genes that are ordinarily over come by flame broiling bugers and cleaning fry vats. This most unique of behaviors is usually directed toward a rather feeble individual that has no self esteem and is generally is poor physical condition.:p

Joey,
Tout jour is spelled "toujours" Not bashing just correcting.

PhantomChaos 05-23-2003 01:04 PM

oh......toujours means "always"

audacity 05-23-2003 01:09 PM

actually it was not...the name came from kevin blake...one of my BEST friends and training partner for many years! the quote was used by may generals throughout time to fire the troops up!...some days it was really hard getting out of bed and giving a 110%...he not only was right there to kick me in the ass in the gym,,,,but there whenever i needed him in life too...it's more about getting up when your beat down...exceeding expectations...taking the bold line...maybe one day i will feel i have done something...but for now all i can do is look for the next boldest line...

audacity 05-23-2003 01:11 PM

pat...i know...i still have not corrected it...

Bashing is when you grab a bat and beat the living daylights out of some idiot who just went thru the no wake zone that your boat was tied up in and sent the boat up on the dock. This would also apply to an idiot in an auto who cut you off or hit you. Otherwise free speech is free speech and anything on this Board is constructive criticism:D

JaayTeee 05-23-2003 02:10 PM

My "thinned skinned" acquaintance's
(usually with views to the left of mine)
would lead you to believe that any constructive
criticism, or negative comments are
BASHING.

Here's another possibility:

Bash = Party,

so, bashing = partying :D

MitchStellin 05-23-2003 02:19 PM

Yes. Bashing is partying. enough said, lets PARTY:D

Uncle Toys 05-23-2003 03:13 PM

1. Just treat others the way you would like to be treated. If they don't respond in kind, given sufficient time, kick the chit out of them!

2. Debate is good, sophistry is evil.

3. Life is tough if your thin skinned.

4. There always has been and there always will be a small percentage of the crowd you'll just need to tollerate e.g. theres still a Flat Earth society.

Wow, I guess Dad wasn't as dumb as I thought :eureka:

TGIF!

T2X, Always nice to hear a few well thought out words on a subject we have all thought about at least once or twice. I thing Bashing is often confused with Slander. One can give an opinion of quality and reliability, also an opinion of a circumstance with out it being slander. I have, on more than one occasion had threads and or comments magically disappear when I have given them as opinion and not fact. Although disturbed that I am sharing an opinion with others that may either learn or at the least begin to ponder from my point of view, Those responsible for this site could be sued! Society as I see it (Opinion Time) has put a gag on our first amendment rights and we are censored by those who face the music on our behalf. So to cut this short. Is there "Bashing" on OSO??? Absolutely, as there should be. We give our opinions and point of views until a thread gets poofed. That is the point of the public forum. Opinions and sharing of knowledge. This site used to have some great debates that we all learned from...To the point where you would read a thread and then call those involved. Unfortunately the word "Bashed" was overrun by the word "Slander" and we all learned the word "Censored". We cannot Blame Steve or Jeff, Only those of us that are thin skinned and could not retort...only call our Lawyers!

1. Rectory........ a home for unwed fathers

2. Nunnery...... a home for unwed sisters

3. Sophistry...... a home for unwed Sophie's

Or is it a room just off the Sacristy where old Sophie Tucker songs play incessantly?

or is it a factory where Sofas are manufactured??

I like these definitions much better than that deep stuff.

That was the basic idea. Although "a home for unwed Sophie's" sounds better!

Sycophant...... Distant relative to the elephant....... This smaller, long nosed varmint is notable for its ability to follow other creatures (usually Baboons) closely while perfectly duplicating whatever sounds the followed creature makes. This serves no earthly purpose (not to be confused with Porpoise .. a sleek sea mammal named after a high perfomance boating phenomenon most often demonstrated by Jersey Speed Skiffs) other than to give the impression that there are a lot more Baboons on earth than , in truth, there actually are.

The favorite food of the Sychophant.....is Koolaid.

Actually, It is a blatant effort aimed at motivating Too Old to post his "artist's conception".....of a Sychophant.

Why Nort, you sly trickster you. All these years we just thought you were an excessive party animal. When in fact, you are a cunning-linguist. :D

PhantomChaos 05-27-2003 06:47 PM

UT-

That fact that I am an "excessive party animal' in a quintessence way doesn't mean that I can't be a cunning-linguist at the same time! I'm more trenchant than others might have opined.

Are you going to the SCOPE run this weekend? If so, perhaps we'll confabulate about this some more. :D :D :D

Uncle Toys 05-27-2003 07:11 PM

Wow Fred, and all this time I just thought it meant someone was a butt-kisser. Having been born and raised in SoCal probably explains my lack of culture, wisdom and savoir faire such as the great and good T2x possesses. :o :o :D :D

Nort, this weekend? Nope, sorry to say! House shopping in Del Mar this weekend. The current thinking being, two boats would be evil, need to stay away from you ocean boyz for a while. MUST...CONTROL...EXCESSIVE...TESTOSTERONE...SPENDI NG....HABITS.
