chine walking

i have a 31' vindicator with twin 280 hp merc outboards at around 80 mph the boats starts to chine walk . i have even change the drives around and it still does it . would a set of trim plates help this and how long do they need to be.

Treadwellmotorsports 05-26-2003 08:07 PM

trim tabs will work. should not need any more then 12 inches wich is the smallest you can get with k kieffifere. don't go any longer boat is to small.

I have found a cheeper route is to say 3 Hail Mary's and hammer it:D

Chine walking is a result of flat water :D

Dave1972 05-26-2003 09:16 PM

You may want to ask Darin @ Houston Propellor but I've heard that chinewalking can sometimes be related to too much prop diameter. I'm not an expert but have heard that can be one of the reasons....how's the bottom of your boat?

Well...this should get you started! Good luck and let us know what you find is the culprit.

Treadwellmotorsports 05-26-2003 09:36 PM

that can be a reason. it certainly isn't flat water.

check your motor mounts. If the are old it will cause chine walking. You need soild aluminum. You can buy them at bobs machine.

Ron P 05-26-2003 10:21 PM

Do you have a little toe in on the drives? About 1/2 inch difference between the nose cone and the end of the prop shaft might help.

Are you spinning in or out?

You people are rude. Let me be the first to say welcome to the board. My boat is big and slow so I cant help on the chine walk thing :)

Ron P 05-26-2003 11:17 PM

You would probably find the boat more stable with the drives spinning outward.

The prop can have a definet effect on chine walking. So can the trim levels and steering play. I have to disagree on the prop diameter as causing the chine walk. The hydromotive prop has a large diameter and it's one of the more stable props to run.

WELCOME TO THE SHOW, merc 280s k planes.

Shane 05-27-2003 06:52 AM

Welcome to the board. If all else fails, you COULD buy a SKATER!;) :) Planes will definitely help. Like Treadwell said, don't go to big as too much of a good thing is bad. Also, Ron P made a good point, and I am CERTAIN T2x will attest too viamently, spin those wheels out. Best of luck.

CayFomula 05-27-2003 06:53 AM

Try raising the engines another bolt hole (if this is an option), if you are not already too high this generally reduces chine walk.
