For you garage tinkerers, here's an idea for a rainy day project:

I've made simple pipe plugs that work very well, refer to the sketch I made below.

Make some flat, round plates with center holes out of wood or plexiglass or whatever you may have laying around. In the middle, find some silicone closed cell sponge rubber or if nothing else is available cut a nice, thick slab out of a nerf football slightly smaller in diameter than the exhaust pipe. Mount a bolt or threaded rod with a nut on the inside which goes through all the parts. On the outside use a wingnut and a washer to cap it off.

Stick it in the exhaust pipe and tighten down the wingnut...When the sponge begins to compress, it will expand and fill the pipe.

You may also want to epoxy or 5200 the the bolt to the backside piece of wood so it doesn't turn on you when tightening the wingnut

Dangle a bright piece of ribbon from it as a reminder to "Remove Before Flight."

Why not just start them up and blow them out of it every so often? The water running through it will clean all the crap out too.

It wouldn't bother me as much if we had flappers somewhere, but we don't. I guess eventaully the stupid birds will learn.
