Optima Batteries, Blue or Yellow?

I know that this subject has been beat to death but I cant seem to get a straight answer from anyone:o

I am looking for the best battery for powering my sound system for long periods of time.

Rivercrazy 05-28-2003 11:12 AM

The Yellow and Blue top are the same battery internally. The difference between the two is the blue top has the wing nut battery connections in addition to the slug type pole connectors.

Just make sure you get either one with the "light grey" case instead of the dark grey.

Light grey = deep cycle
Dary grey = starting

Well, looks like thats that!

Been using the blue top OPTIMA for my stereo - works great - have not drained it flat yet, & thats with 2 large amps going for extended periods of time - well worth it in my book

Reindl Powerboats 05-28-2003 11:28 PM

Blue... but like he said they are basically the same

Will a Optima D31M fit a battery holder that comes on a stock Fountain (32 ft)?

I've been running two D34M Blue tops for my stereo and they work great. I need to add two more for my recent upgrades and have been considering the D31Ms but might just go with the D34M's to match my other ones. My buddy has 3 of the D31Ms and they can really take a beating!

What battery brackets are you using to hold you D34M.

How about the Troll Fury they have on there website. 2 D34M comes in it's own case and you screw it to the floor. Thought about getting that. Or would it be better to go with 2 D31M's hooked together for the stereo?

Checking around on the web and found this web page.

Found out the Stinger SP1700 I bought 2 years ago was made by Hawker. And I paid about $120 more than I had to. Live and learn.
What does any one know about SVR batts looking at an SVR80-12 for $110.

Also looking at the Dual Pro LS 2400 Lightning series deep cycle. group 27 $165

Any thoughts

Better Cheaper Batteries...

A different idea. To make a long story short. I had a old electric fork lift that ATE deep cycle batteries 'cause I didn't want to spend $800.00 - $1000.00 on a real battery. A friend was buying new golf cart bateries. Put his 6 year OLD ones in and it would spin the tires. Next time I needed camper batteries I asked the guy at the local battery shop (very knowledgeale and helpful company) if he would recommend his very best deep cycle or two cheap golf cart batteries. He said by all means the golf cart batteries. Another note of interest. Check the warranty on a deep cycle verses a starting battery. Even the Optimas are only maybe half as long for the deep cycles.
Hope this helps.

REAL good deals on batteries, etc. from the manufacturer:

East Penn Manufacturing/DEKA makes every kind of battery imaginable, and supplies many manufacturers, including Formula with OEM batteries. They are a very big company, and make conventional, gel and AGM batteries in all sizes in cranking, deep-cycle and dual-purpose types, as well as golf cart, UPS, forklift, etc. etc. etc... Visit the web site and look around (you'll need Adobe Acrobat), then call the number (610-682-6361) and ask for the factory store. You can get blemish/seconds for about 60 percent off.

Since they are 7 miles from my house, I just go out there and pick up what I need. I don't know if they will ship to individuals or not. It's not just batteries, though - they make cables, lugs, wire, terminals, covers, boots, tools, chargers, testers - everything in automotive, industrial, and marine grade. I needed some 2/0 battery cable and every marine store I went to wanted $8.00 a foot!! I got it from DEKA at $2.04 a foot - tinned and everything. (If anyone needs some, let me know - I bought a 100' roll, and have 50' left.)

Group 31 combination deep cycle/cranking battery (conventional): list- $163.95; out the door - $65.06
Group 31 cranking (conventional): list - $136.95; out the door - $49.06.
Group 31 gel deep cycle lists for $280.95, so figure about $106....

Jan,

I ended up making my own battery tray that holds both D34M's side by side. I thought I had a pic here but it must be at the house.

I used some diamond plate bed rails and some other scrap aluminum to make mine. It turned out really well. It's not as nice as the billet ones above but the price was right! :)

LETHAL WEAPON 03-26-2004 08:16 PM

HEY GUY'S,I AM DOING THE SAME THING,PUTTING TWO OPTIMA BATTERIES IN FOR A SOUND SYSTEM.I WAS WONDERING WHAT WOULD WORK BEST,HOOKING THEM TOGETHER,POSITIVE TO POSITIVE- NEGATIVE TO NEGATIVE,OR JUST SWITCHING FROM ONE TO THE OTHER WHEN ONE GETS WEAK.

THANKS, HOWARD

jlsnyder26_Sonic 03-31-2004 04:29 PM

You need to run them in parallel but through a battery switch. Trying to charge two batteries with a factory alternator will cut its life in half. Use the switch to charge one at a time or upgrade to a 100Amp or 200Amp alternator.

Here is a pic of my two yellow tops...I ran 3 amps a total of 2800 watts on 24 speakers through out my boat.

I could run the system hard for about 4 to 6 hours before the amps would start to clip.
