Understanding New York City Poker Run Rules

I hope there can be some clarification regarding the rules regarding the New York Poker Run. Its states that it is mandatory 5 mph going up the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge, which will be enforced by the Coast Guard and the NYC Police Dept.. which violated can result in a summons for $5,000. What about the return to Liberty Landing, which is supposedly the same restricted area on the return to Finish. Does the Speed Violation exist heading North and not South?

42TS,

Justed read the rules, you're right. Please let me knowwhen you have the answer

No it doesn't. They make you idle all the way up from Liberty Landing Marina to the GW bridge. I guess it just too many boats going at top speed all at once. Coming back it's not a pack (so there's no 5 mph limit), so go full throttle if you want.

The way I read it, it's a $5000 fine issued by the Coast Guard/New York City Harbor Partrol when traveling in excess of
5 MPH?

I stand corrected 10knots

We've done this run every year. It used to start at the Statue of Liberty. There is so much traffic that every year they start the Poker Run further and further up the Hudson every year. They cannot shut down the waterway for the start of the race like they do for the SBI race. Plus they usually have other events scheduled that day too. One year it was some kind of swim around Manhattan, and another year there was kayaks crossing the Hudson. I don't know of anyone slowing down at the end of the run, usually it "balls to the wall" full throttle for that last footage on the video tape.

5 MPH, 10 knots, same difference. As long as everyone is at idle speed for that duration to the GW you won't get ticketed. But if you are going a little faster trying and get to the beginning of the pack, then you will.

Lucididee2 has given all of the right answers. Good Job!
There is no speed limit on the return run down river back to Liberty Landing Marina. The helicopter will continue to "pick-up" boats that have not been videod/photographed, on the South side/Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge for photo shoots. and run with them toward Liberty Landing Marina.
