Anti Freeze for Merc Closed cooling
Can someone help me locate the thread that was on here regarding anti freeze for merc closed cooling system like on the 496. I tried on the general and tech sections. Someone was asking for source for it other than merc.
I need some.
Thanks,
Rick

I don't know the name of it but it is the antifreeze that the newer vehicles use (GM trucks). There is not a brand name but it is a certain "type" of antifreeze. I have it home and I will look tonight for you. ET

The new GM trucks use what they call, Dexcool (I think). They do say, that any Silicate free anti-freeze works. I don't know if that's what they use in the 496's or not. But, I think the coolant in my Tahoe is that orangeish color, so it could be the same.

I would expect (hope?) that ANY anti-freeze used in a boat is a non-toxic antifreeze. (Not to be confused with "low" tox antifreezes.) If there is any kind of leak into the bilge or between the raw water and closed cooling systems, the last thing you want going into the lake/ocean/river is regular automotive antifreeze. Very nasty stuff.

Sorry to say, non toxic is propylene glycol and is not suitable for use as a coolant. It is fine for winterizing. Good old ethylene glycol is what is needed. Silicate free is the key.
