Back From Smoke, and Yea, It Was Worth It

The weather could a been better, but we still had a great time, met a bunch of new people and " played" real hard :D We decided to start from the middle in the back to work our way thru and see some boats but the haze made it a little difficult, eventually we got around everybody ( the haze at this point wasn't dangerous just annoying, and there was less off the beach) except Mr. Scism and his MTI cat. We ran beside him for several miles at just a tick over 100mph until he decided to raise the bar another 10mph or so, bye bye. Three miles out of Holland (at over a 100) we lost steering  ,opened the hatches and WHAT A FREAK'N MESS, a power steering line had backed out of one of the pumps ATF everywhere. We floated around for 30 minutes while I got it fixed, we caught up with most of the fleet in South Haven and then headed back with them to GH. The visibilty was fair untill about 3 - 4 miles out of GH then there was none, we idled into beautiful sunshine and 70 degrees in the harbor, and that was it, game over.

Mary and I met more OSO members than I can list here and my crew of Buzzin Bye and Jesse James took ALL of the work out of the run for me. As usual Marc and Bob did a great job, this is absolutely one of the best, most organized runs out there. I know it's hard for people to commit big entry fee's early, but this run is worth the gamble, It's all about fun and we definitely had some :D See ya next year, hopefully I'll have the bilge clean by then.

Jim,

It was a pleasure meeting you, Jerry, & Dan (BuzzinBye).

Your boat is awesome, love that dang thing, Sorry to
hear about your boat Jerry.

Thanks allot for the shirt, I'll wear it out for sure :)
Also can't believe how many Apaches were there,
they came out of the woodwork. And to top that off,
two of the baddest Half breeds I know. :) :)

Ps. I would have introduced my wife, but she had a touch
of the flu, no sense sharing.

LEOPAJM 06-09-2003 01:23 PM

Have to Agree ..... After all is said and done ..... "Smoke..... " was once again a Top Notch event !!!!! Even with the funky weather and my equipment malfuntions it was a great time. This run has developed a bit of a mystique of it's own ... maybe on par with the old Pier 33 and MOCA events that drew such huge crowds. Hope to see this continue to grow !!!! Now I'd like to thank everyone who made my trip for me ....

Andy and the whole Victory Perf. (Fun @ Lunch Bunch) for getting the boat together and getting me on the road.

Jim, Dan and Shane for busting my balls the ENTIRE weekend ... Thanks guys .... Capt. Oblivious never forgets !!!!

Doug, Scott and Kristen (my wife) .... the only time you'll ever wish your wife was a little heavier is when your trying to get a 14,000# triple engine 41 on plane with two engines and your looking for a little extra tonnage in the bow !!!!

Whoever the hell Kirby is ?!?!?!?!?

JM

MIdnightRider 06-09-2003 02:45 PM

Well I guess no matter what the weather is the event will always be top notch with the crowd that follows it. We did allot of wrenching, a little bit of running, a little more wrenching, then it was called, and we did allot more drinking. It was nice meeting you Saber boys, I had a good time drinking and bench racing with you folks at Kirby's. Thanks for the T-Shirt. Midnight

Scarab3DMC 06-09-2003 03:53 PM

Ok Jerry now I know why no one was at home this weekend...... I did that last year too... Any way my mail box is cleaned.... pm me about what else is happening and those props.... Dave:crazy:  :D

MIdnightRider 06-09-2003 04:12 PM

Oh Yeah, I wanted to thank my friend and mechanic "Chicken" for spending the better part of the week helping me fix the motor that went dead the weekend before on our shakedown run. We worked the better part of the week until finally at 4pm on Friday when it finally fired, then again on Saturday when the selenoid stuck on, while starting the port motor. Also Renegade Steve for loaning me a few things along the way. And I did not forget my crew who stood on the dock drinking beer and enjoying themselves, thanks for all your help guys :). Then when it was finally up to a full run for the afternoon the fog stopped us. Has anyone ever felt like some boating weekends were not meant to be? Midnight

Jolley 06-09-2003 07:46 PM

Good to see ya' Shane and team!!!!!!!!!! WickedWon is way cool, met alot of OSOer's. Yes 'where's all the booze' I heard that more than twice.......... see ya soon, us:cool: :D

KAAMA 06-09-2003 08:17 PM

I was wondering what happend to WickedWon. I expected to see him in the first wave of boats as I stood on the south Holland pier. Shortly after the boats headed back out and south for South Haven I walked back off the pier and left the area. I would have loved to have seen WickedWon run----and it IS a RUNNER! I always look forward to hearing and seeing that boat run! One of my favorites! Glad all was okay.

Shane, I didn't know you were up here for the event---I would have liked to have met you.

yzbert 06-09-2003 08:47 PM

midnight, i was with the group that loaned you the battery, sorry to hear that you could not get things refired. bad asss looking boat.

BuzzinBye! 06-09-2003 09:19 PM

Thank You very much once again!!

As always a Poker Run on WickedWon with You and Mary proves to be awesome. I hope you remembered to get gas in the truck before you dropped off the boat!:D

Shane it was great meeting you and very fun.

Jerry busted your balls has become a favorite pastime of mine, only because when your around everyone stops busting mine!

Kaama if it wasn't for the power steering fluid leak under the hatch WickedWon would have been the first V bottom you would have seen.:)

Apachekid it was good seeing you again as always.

Cougarman it was great to finally meet you.

P.S. Jim do you have a 5/8" box end wrench I can borrow:p :D

Thanks again to all

Dan Burtscher (BuzzinBye)

Scott 06-09-2003 09:33 PM

Glad you guys had a great time! I can only imagine the crap Jerry had to put up with:D
Have you guys happened to notice all of our Signature lines:rolleyes:

WickedWon 06-10-2003 07:19 AM

The Toy Camera Worked !

Shane, thanks for the pic's, e-mail the model of that thing cause I know Mary's gonna want one, we don't worry about Jerry when he's in the truck cause there are LINES on the road !

Kaama, sorry to disappoint, it was really a weird day out there, I've never seen the lake that flat, it's quite frankly the worst kind of water for the Saber, perfect for the "handful" boats, but we still had them covered until the leak, I think Shane now understands how stable and safe a 100mph obsolete V boat can be. Kevin King, who last year made me pay attention all day, sold his Cig ( Good To Be The King ) but stopped over to tell me he's building a 47' OL GTX with BIG power, then he just grinned and asked me if I'd be back, hhmmm...

Midnight, thanks for the shirt, great to meet you and your crew, and then there's Todd (Chicken?) I think he's even more " wired " than me, hope he has some luck selling his machined componets, they look almost too good.

Dan, Phil M. came by on sunday morning and asked if I was gonna get fuel before we hooked up, I thought of you A-HOLE :D

Cougarman, good to finally meet ya, don't give up on that beast of yours.

Our next stop is probably gonna be the Mentor Ohio run, I'll be the guy with the pink bilge:rolleyes:

JD

LEOPAJM 06-10-2003 07:32 AM

Hey Guy's ...... BTW .... how'd Shane make out with the "herd" that was mooovin in on him Sat. nite @ Kirby's ???? He was nowhere to be found sunday mornin ... Hmmmmmm ????

WickedWon 06-10-2003 09:10 AM

Lines On The Road

Yea, something to keep ya on course :D :D

"GOT ATF ?"

Ouch !!

LEOPAJM 06-10-2003 09:26 AM

Hey speaking of ATF .... maybe you could wring out the rags after you clean your bilge and send the recouped fluid to Doug to top of my new DEEP SUMP BAM !!!!!!!!

cougarman 06-10-2003 11:21 AM

Leopajm

How did your windscreen etc. turn out ?

P.S. Did you really think dry sump meant actually
running them dry? :D :D

To many info-mercials
with these miracle coatings you can put in. :D :D
And then believe it or not you can actually run them with out
oil, spray a garden hose in them etc. and they are un touched.
Run perfect..............................

Cougarman

LEOPAJM 06-10-2003 01:03 PM

Everything that was done turned out really well (fairing, guages, screens, delete door, engine compartment refurb., crash box, ect. ect. .....) I'll try to get some pics up soon .

"ya mean ya gotta put erl in them thar trannies ???"

Semper Fi 06-10-2003 01:04 PM

Hey WickedWon

That is one mean a$$ looking Saber you have. I am a V-bottom guy, so I love to see the V-bottoms spank some cats in the rough water (when they can!!)

BuzzinBye! 06-10-2003 09:06 PM

Shane,

Nice work! Those shots look great. Had a great time meeting you this weekend.

Jerry!,
Well what can I say?????

Dan

Madcow 06-10-2003 11:39 PM

MAN are you guys hard on Jerry! Thats ok, I'm just glad when somebody else gets drunk and stupid and takes some of the attention off me.:D

WickedWon 06-11-2003 06:26 AM

Captain Oblivious

Hard on Jerry ! Lets see:

1. Will he be late Yes
2. Will the first words upon arrival be " I need Fuel" Yes
3. Will he be late in the morning Yes
4. Will we uncover his boat Yes
5. Will we wipe down his boat Yes
6. Will he then say "got any more towels ?" Yes
7. Will he then say "got any upholstery cleaner ?" Yes
8. Will he then say " you know where we're going ? " Yes
9. Will he almost run into me before the day is over Yes
10. Will he grin all day Yes

Would I go to a run without him ? HELL NO, he brings the most important thing, THE FREAK'N FUN ! But thank God there's only one of him:D :D

JD

LEOPAJM 06-11-2003 06:55 AM

You guys are too kind ... really !!!

Hey , I'm just trying to offer challenges throughout the weekend to keep you guys on your toes. :D

BTW ... Bud, If I didn't "borrow" all your stuff , eventually you wouldn't have any room left !!! HAHA !!:D

BTW 2 ... Do I really look that old ?????

JM

WickedWon 06-11-2003 07:11 AM

Actually, that picture is quite flattering I think Shane touched it up. :D

LEOPAJM 06-11-2003 07:23 AM

OUCH !!!!!!!!

Where's that Rogaine !?!?!?!!?

Madcow 06-11-2003 10:55 PM

By the way, who was that really OLD looking guy in the smoke video from last year?:D :D :D

LEOPAJM 06-12-2003 07:00 AM

I'm not sure ... but there were quite a few celebrities floating around last year .... I think that was either Bernie Little(RIP) or George Hamilton !?!?!?!?!?!

(*** guy gave a damn good interview though ***)

Madcow 06-12-2003 09:19 AM

Yeah, he really acted like he knew what he was talking about.:D

Nauti Kitty 06-12-2003 09:57 PM

Admittedly it's not that Wicked

Oh sure it's no saber but this is not a terrible cruising speed for a 39 conventional v-bottom at sotw.

I only hope the 3rd saber will live up to the reputation of the two ohio boys. Nice to see you JIm, Mary and Jerry again. It was in the Kirby saturday night in case you don't remember. Hope you all have a great summer.

Will the three sabers be running to key west in nov. I hope so. NK:D

Shane it was nice to meet you. Sounds like you had fun, hope to see you again in our neck of the woods. Next time maybe we can get some waves and you will see how wicked it can be.:D
Found this picture of Wicked Won turning around after loosing his steering at sotw.
NK

P.S. That's 100 at 5200:cool:

WickedWon 06-13-2003 07:21 AM

Jesus, It Was'nt That Cold !

Nauti Kitty, nice gloves ! Always good to see ya, but it was better to see a, was her name Lisa ? he, he... Anyway is that GPS speed or " Faria " speed :D :D Damn shame we never got a chance to run together, the last two legs would of been a hoot, the boats are a lot more fun after ya burn off 150 or 200 gallons. Oh well, looking forward to watching your project come together, if its anything like mine you're gonna love it ;)

JD

like I was saying this crazy sob is taking a classic 100mph boat apart to.................................... go figure

BTW I don't know how long the steering had been gone, the thing tracks so well and it was so flat, I might not of turned the wheel for a couple a miles

WickedWon 06-13-2003 07:26 AM
