What do you think of this?

Let's try this again, not sure what happened to the first thread.
Give me your honest opinion. Is there anyone offering something like this already? I am tired of using a hand pump to fill up the outdrives with gear oil. Could not find anything at West Marine, Boaters World etc that you could buy that would do the job automatically, so I made something. Let me introduce the "Dock Holiday" self contained 12 volt gear oil pump. I tried it out last night and it filled an outdrive in about 15 minutes. It is slow enough that you don't have a mess when the oil passes the vent plug and you have plenty of time to turn it off before you have to worry about an overflow out the fill bottle. Warning: "Not For Use On 42 Sonics :D |

They moved it to the Parts for Sale section, but now it's gone.

I like the idea, Dock. It would make things a whole lot easier. I do wonder what happened to the other thread? It says 'moved'...where?

Fred,
The 115 Volt idea is the way to go, but I have less in this entire setup than the price of a 115 volt pump! Just wanted to share this idea with all my OSO brothers and sisters. They are easy to make and I will be glad to help anyone out on one! Did not even know if it would work, but much to my surprise it worked "GREAT":D Thanks for the input. Dock |
I made something of the same sorts but air powered......holds 3quarts of oil and all you do is hookup an air line and slowly open the air supply line......nice and quick! :D

Are you supposed to have oil in the outdrives? :D :D :D

Hey Dock,
What have you got that hose hooked to on the outdrive?? Mine goes into a plug hole on the side of the drive. Course, mines an '89 Bravo, is yours newer with a relocated fill port? |

Course, mines an '89 Bravo, is yours newer with a relocated fill port? All the Bravo's I have had are like this. The drain/fill plug is where it is shown in the picture and the vent plug is up on the side. These are 2002 Bravo "XZ" drives, but the 2000 and 2001 Bravo Ones were the same way. Sounds like they must have redesigned somewhere between 99 and 2000. Dock |

In operation with the power cord hooked up to my lawn mower!

I built the same thing out of a garden insecticide sprayer. $9.99 at Wal-Mart. You can use it anywhere and it goes slow enough to not make a mess..........

Hey Dock...is that a fuel pump??? Just wondering cause most are cooled by the fuel passing through them.....will oil pose any sort of problem? I do like how nice and small this package is.

Wally,
Yes it is a fuel pump. I bought it from a guy that has an auto parts store next to my business. He knew I was looking for some type of pump and he recommended it. He has used one before for the same type of application with gear oil for cars. Talked like it should last pretty long. I touched it after use last night and did not notice that it was hot. It seemed to have no trouble at all pumping the oil. Just would be nice it it was a little faster or higher volume. Will keep you posted. Total I have less than $45.00 in everthing and the hand pumps go for $10.00 and they don't last long, so what the heck!. Dock |
