determinging true engine milage???

i know on merc boat engine you can hook up the scan tool and it will tell you how many hours are on an engine. Do car engine have the same thing? Specifically a 5.7 chevy vortec???

if so what tool and who can I borrow one from???

Don't know about the 5.7, but on my 2001 8.1 the odometer is digital and and you can even push a couple of buttons and it will tell you how many hours the engine has been running.

There is also a computer display that tells you when there is a problem and what to do. For instance, "transmission HOT" "pull over and idle" If you fail to do what it tells you, the manual staes that it could void the warranty on that item. the computer records everything.
