Balsa is Balsa
Balsa is Balsa. The real trick is vacuumed bagged epoxy. HE seems to be the only builder who is working with epoxy and it shows. Skater is the best of the best hands down. No gelcoat and mat makes a much stronger lighter boat.

SuperLite™ - premium grade end gain balsa core material supplied in tightly controlled densities from as low as 4.5lbs ft3.
Balsa is no longer just a one density core. I still prefer it over the foams... |

Baltek(one of the companies that make the stuff) grows its own balsa trees. I'm sure they use genetic engineering, etc. http://www.baltek.com/ vtec Very cool. I cruised that site......pretty neat. I had know idea and I'm a friggin engineer! (but I deal with metals and electronics) Thanks for pointing that out. |
