Tommy,
NO HOPPED UP SPORTBIKES! If you want a bike, get a Suzuki DRZ400E and put a dualsport kit on it. Mucho fun and not nutso fast. You'll be able to get anywhere quickly and it's not too heavy to ride semi-seriously offroad (big air is out unless you opt for serious suspension mods and weight reduction).
ALL sportbikes north of a 600 are WAY TOO FAST for a newly-licensed rider (and I don't care iof you've been riding and racing bikes since you were 2). It's just a matter of getting your "traffic legs" under you before the speed thing comes into play (think in terms of 4 years).
PUDER: I've got an '86 VFR750 Interceptor myself (you mentioned your friend had an Interceptor but weren't specific as to the 1984 VF model or the more sporting '86 model). Mine has a set of carbs, cams, and crank from the HRC kit. I roadraced it for a few years back in the 80's. Last time I rode it *hard* on the street, it ran even with a ZX7R up to the rev limiter in 6th (1992, I believe it was).
Nasty,
I've got a green-tank RD400 if you know of a good home for it...

mike,
i believe his is an 85. It has some rash on the body panels from the previous owner but other than, its clean. I think he put mayeb 50 miles on it since rebiulding it. He has decieded it just isn't worth it to ride on the street anymore.
