Boater dies in mishap
St. Louis teen falls overboard, hit by boat near the 4-mile marker
By Marsha Paxson
LAKE OF THE OZARKS -- A 19-year-old St. Louis man was killed at the 4-mile marker on the main channel of Lake of the Ozarks Sunday when the pontoon boat he fell from ran over him.
Missouri Water Patrol Capt. Joe Hughes said the man, whose name has not been released, was holding onto a rope and standing on the front of the boat when he fell overboard.
Hughes said the boat's forward momentum made it impossible for the boat operator to avoid hitting the man.
The victim never resurfaced.
Water in the area of the accident is believed to be 68-105 feet deep. Officers cordoned off a 75-100-square-yard area to begin recovery operations.
As many as nine passengers were reportedly on board the boat at the time of the accident. No one else was hurt.
Hughes said recovery efforts may take some time due to the depth of the water.
This marks the lake's second boating accident fatality of the year.
A 19-year-old Virginia man drowned last month after he fell off the top of a pontoon boat in Party Cove.
Sunday's fatality brought to a close a weekend marred by boating accidents.
Two lake area men were the first hurt when their 25-foot Baja hit a wave and flipped end over end on the Grand Glaize Arm of Lake of the Ozarks.
According to the Missouri Water Patrol, John Garcia, 41, was operating the boat Friday at the 1.5-mile marker near Watson Hollow Cove when the accident occurred.
Patrol officers said Garcia and passenger Jason Atkinson, 42, of Osage Beach, were rescued by passing boaters.
Garcia sustained a back injury and broken ribs. Atkinson broke his left hip. Both were taken to Lake Regional Health Systems for treatment.
Garcia was cited for careless and imprudent operation of the boat, which is owned by Big Thunder Marina.
Two boats collided and injured a Lake Ozark man in a late night crash.
Officers said poor visibility caused a collision between a 27-foot Scarab operated by Linnea Osment, 32, of Lake Ozark and a 33-foot Rinker operated by Timothy O'Brien, 63, of Leawood, Kan. The accident occurred around midnight Saturday at the 5 mile-marker.
The drivers reportedly were unable to see each other until it was too late to avoid a crash.
Osment's passenger and owner of the Scarab, Cary Osment, 40, suffered injuries to his right shoulder and was taken to Lake Regional Health Systems.
A wakeboard rider broke his leg Saturday.
Patrol officers reported that the accident occurred in Camden County at the 13-mile marker on the Big Niangua Arm near Camdenton at about 8:10 p.m.
Jason Haefeli, 25, of Warson Woods, Mo., was attempting to get on a wake board as he was being pulled behind a 2002 SeaRay operated by Jason Dietz, 23, of St. Louis. Haefeli said as the boat began moving he felt his leg snap.
Haefeli suffered a broken right femur and was taken to Lake Regional Health Systems.
No damage was reported to the boat, owned by Robert Teak of St. Louis.
Two men barely escaped injury when their idling bass boat was hit by a cruiser. The impact threw the men into the lake.
Patrol reports indicate the accident happened Sunday at 12:29 a.m. in Camden County at the 18.5-mile marker in Osage Beach.
Patrol reports indicate a 1987 Champion bass boat operated by Joseph Anderson, 51, of St. Louis, was idling when it was struck by a 2000 SeaRay cruiser operated by Michael Roberts, 48, of St. Louis.
Anderson and passenger Donald Wisdom, 48, of St. Clair, Mo., were both thrown from their boat in the accident but sustained no injuries.

I feel your guys pain, it is allways the careless person who is giving law enforcement the ammunition to spoil are play time.
The same wreckless attitude is causing problems at Lake Havasu, we call them part timers. You know the type, drink all day, litter our waters, and have no respect for others on the water.
I think it is contageous because once winter sets in they all seem to find themselves in the dunes too.
I know lets call em "Lake Lice" or "Sand Fleas"

I don't want to make light of the sad news but the last line of this part of the report is kinda humorous.
A wakeboard rider broke his leg Saturday.
