Lake Erie Sandbar

A lot of talk about great sandbar parties at other lakes (havasu, LOTO, etc.), never heard about anything on Lake Erie. We hang out a lot on the sandbar just NE of Maumee Bay State Park, but very few seem to know about it. Obviously, great times at Put in Bay and Kelley's, but where are all the great sandbar times in Western Erie?

Are you referring to The Bar off of Little Cedar Point? I have seen boats there but we typically hang out either on the west or east side of woodtick peninsula depending on wind direction or sometime up at the "Hothole" .What kind of boat do you have ?I have a little black & white Cigarette.

I really need to head west more often:D

Bam Bam 06-25-2003 11:38 AM

Not sure if you guys are refering to the same place or not because I do not know the name, but south of Long Point (canadian side) there is a beach that was very busy and hopping last time I was there 3yrs ago.

Look forward to someone responding who knows.

I am hoping to make out there sometime this year.

SeaNDouble 06-25-2003 12:44 PM

Don't know whether it's little cedar point, or not, I'd have to look at a chart. But it's just to the NE of Maumee Bay State Park. Very rarely more than a couple boats. Sometimes go to woodtick, but the water is usually pretty nasty coming out of the Ottawa River and it's usually pretty tame. If the hothole is what some call Warm water bay (by Monroe power plant), that seems a little tame too. Just wondered where the big party places are. Maybe need to start one.

btw, I have a Powerquest Conquest, white with red, maroon and grey stripes.

I go to the sand bar across from cedar point in sandusky bay. I love the fact that its a secret. There's always enough people there but not over exposed.

Can you still get into the "HOTHOLE"? Last time I was in there it was pretty shallow. I am referring to the Detroit Edison coal burnung power plant in Monroe. Same Hothole I trust?

You will be going there with us this summer! Cant stay at Kellys all the time. There is alot of drinking to be done at the sandbar!:D

SeaNDouble 06-25-2003 01:18 PM

No one for anything closer to the Maumee River? The Sandusky Bay sandbar sounds great, but pretty far for a day trip ( I come from a club about 5 miles up the Maumee River). If I go that far, usually end up at PIB.

THRILLSEEKER 06-25-2003 01:55 PM

Is that the one where you have to go through that really narrow channel to get to?? If it is I think that I have been there a time or two;)

rws 06-25-2003 01:55 PM

I have not been to the hothole / petri dish this year, but the water looked high enough last weekend to get in there.

If you're talking about the narrow shallow channel from Maumee River mouth, that's to go to Woodtick, usually a good crowd, but pretty bad water.

Bam Bam,

You might be refuring to Pottahawk Point. Chris has been trying to get me to go over to it but so far we haven't made the trip.
I got this pic from some website and here is a link to a marina that has something to do with the get together.

Chris,
Are you tring to entice me into comming to Erie PA. (Presque Isle)
instead of going to the island area next week?

I must say that the weekend that these pics were taken was a lot of fun and you don't have to toss an anchor or find a dock to get right in the mix with the other boaters.

Thank you Cgarett, that is the place. Lots of boats when I went 3 yrs ago and it was not a long weekend either. I have heard that it is starting to rival Party Cove and Havasu for beads etc but this is second hand info. I will probably go check it out this summer.

Re: Lake Erie Sandbar

Pottahawk weekend this year(2006) should be the 8th of July. It's a sunday but it's mardi gras on the water ...drinking, beads flashing - the whole works ....best party I've ever been to....5000 boats just off long point park (pottahawk point) ontario canada. I will post pics...you will not regret showing up...don't show up too late - it tends to start early. Concert at turkey point marina on saturday night.

pics here ...not mine

Pottahawk Island - Second Sunday every July

To all boaters of the south, just thought I'd give some insight on the little Canadian sandbar making news in Lake Erie. The sandbar is named Pottahawk Island. Every second Sunday in July 10's of 1000's of boater show up and tie up for one of the wildest parties I've ever been to. Looking at Lake Erie, this sandbar is protected by Long Point, quite visible by looking at a pic of the lake. It is across from Erie PA. Boats will tie up side by side for 2 miles, and there is 5 to 7 rows deep. Tunes are cranked, vball nets are up, barges have bands, and everyone walks with open alcohol with no major threat from law enforcement. I've been to put-in-bay for Christmas in July, and it is comparable in a sense, but at Pottahawk, everyone walks in knee deep water. It is July 8th this year.

Erie Desire, Yes you can still get into the hot hole near the coal burning plant. I was just in there this past weekend with my flat deck Scarab, No problems with water depth.

Pottahawk Island

This little Canadian sandbar is one of the greatest places in Lake Erie. Every weekend it is hopping, but the second Sunday every July the event is named The Pottahawk Piss-up. 12,000 boaters showed up last year, Girls Gone Wild the year before. People spend the night, or show up 8am to get a good spot on the bar. Boats are lined up for 2.5 miles and set 5-7 boats deep. It is across from Erie PA. The Saturday night before is wild also in Turkey Point, where many boaters tie up at a local bar in the marina. An event to be witnessed by all sometime in your life. I usually don't miss a weekend out there!
