Ilmor Viper V10 power

Just picked up the newest issue of Powerboat Mag. On page 17 there is an ad for Ilmor performance. They are advertising Viper V10 engines for offshore powerboats. "Stand out from the crowd. The new 550-hp ilmor MV10-s is based on the motor used in the latest Dodge Viper sportscar." These engines produce 600-ft-lbs of torque!! They weigh 800 lbs and are made entirely of aluminum. Sounds COOL!!

Cool. I wonder how $$ expensive they are...

I seen a viper powered cat of some kind at Lake X a couple of months ago.

I think it would make a good marine engine. There are man hop ups and aftermarket parts for the V10. It needs much more trial time though. Cheaper than the 525EFI would be a good start too.

My Father and I raced a 28 Pantera we built back in February 2002 here at the Miami SBI race powered with a Dodge Viper and compared it to a Mercruiser 500 EFI.The motors were very close on the top end within 1 MPH hour of each other. We were doing testing for a company called Natrix marine out of France that was experimenting with the Dodge Viper motor for marine use.I guess Ilmor has taken over the project now.We did not have headers like they are running now which I am certain has improved on its performance. The motor back then needed some more tweaking and testing.

I have attached 2 pictures of the boat and motor that can be found on this site under the Miami SBI races from 2002.

One of the test boats is a 32 Skater that ran around 109. I think they were thinking it would be a bit faster, but they are still testing. The boat is owned by Bob Morgan of Big Thunder Marine at LOTO and is now sitting on a lift at there docks.

I dunno. Questions:

How is it really better than a big-block (besides having more parts), or is it just different? How much? Warranty? Service outlets? Replacement parts? How long are they going to stick with it? (Their SuperCat program lasted exactly one season...)

Looks like a good way to lose a lot of engine room space to me.
