Sandusky Tall Ships

Never been there. Thinking about taking my boat and hanging out in the bay-good or bad? What else is there to do? Will have my two kids with me also.

Let me know the do's and do not's!

Thanks,
Mike

This is a Do-Not-Miss Event. The majesty of these ships and the history behind these massive sailing vessels is breathtaking. If you ever have the chance to ride alongside these ships or see one of these events, do it. You won't be sorry!

I had the oppourtunity to witness a tall ships event here in St. Pete last year! It's awesome.

CigDaze 07-14-2003 05:46 PM

I mean, ya okay, they're pretty cool for blowboats, I guess. :D:D

Scott 07-14-2003 05:56 PM

Dock of the Bay Yacht club has a fun day (Kids)
Battery Park Marina close to the wave pool (Kids)
Sand bar (Kids + Adult)
Cedar Point (Guess:rolleyes: )
Cedar Point Beach (Kids)
Lyman Marina has live bands and bar (never been there:( )
Back Bay area has a McDonald's with a dock:eek: (kids)
Back Bay area Fridays with dockage and the Radison.
Downtown Sandusky and area has Carousel and the Maritime Museum.

I am sure there is a ton of other things that can be added to the list but I'm sure you get the idea:D

Luv-N-It 07-14-2003 06:06 PM

Thanks Scott and Daze for the responses and inputs. Guess I know where I'll be out, weather permitting, this weekend.:D

Luv-N-It 07-14-2003 06:12 PM

Scott, is there a sandbar over by the Friday's I should be aware of that is easy to run aground on?

Scott 07-14-2003 06:20 PM

The water is o.k this year but you must stay in the channel.

fred 07-14-2003 08:39 PM

I will be checking them out when they get to Muskegon on Aug. 8,9 and 10th....I think those are the dates. have saw them before and they are neat, don't miss them...they make you think of pirates.........

CigDaze 07-15-2003 07:26 AM

I think perhaps the coolest ship was a U.S. Coast Guard Sailing vessel. It's called Eagle and it's a 295-foot U.S. Coast Guard trainer.

What you see here is the ship coming into Tampa Bay under the Skyway Bridge...It's about 200' off the water at the center span.

Be careful if you dont know the sandbar area. That thing runs forever!

Scott 07-15-2003 08:34 AM

No Sandbar in the back bay just stay in the channel and have fun.

The sandbar Teambaja is talking about is located (picture a triangle) across from Cedar Point and Battery Park. Take a look at a chart and you will be fine just don't try to cut the sandbar too soon because it does go out a long way. There are channel markers in the Bay to help you navigate the area but I would still study a chart the whole area is shallow.

TEAMBAJA 07-15-2003 09:18 AM

Scott, have you ever gotten out and went for a long walk at the sandbar? You probaby find yourself turning around before you would ever run out of shallow water.

My depth finder isnt hooked up yet, so Im not ready to head over there. Ive pretty much been there several times a year since I was a baby, and cant wait to take the kids over now that I have a boat. They'll love the shallow water.

Luv-N-It 07-15-2003 10:39 AM

Greg,
Where is a good place to put in w/out a lot of crazyness to it?

Scott 07-15-2003 10:55 AM

"Scott, have you ever gotten out and went for a long walk at the sandbar? You probably find yourself turning around before you would ever run out of shallow water. "

Yes and I agree it goes out a long way that is why the channel markers are there:rolleyes: I just wanted to be clear on where the sandbar is located and not have him go into the back bay looking for a sandbar. The only bar I have found back there this year is located at Friday's:crazy:

I would put in at the city of Sandusky ramp this is the only ramp that is in great condition in the area you want to hang out in. They have 4 large easy to use ramps that cost $5.00 for a in and out. The guy that runs it is very helpful. The DNR also has a dock there and give out courtesy checks they are not aggressive and seem to like gofasts as long as you are not way over the DB limit they wont say a word and they do not have a meter :D

TEAMBAJA 07-15-2003 11:08 AM

I have never launched in Sandusky, so Im not sure. Always on the other side of the bay or lake.

Scott, what I meant was have you ever just took a long walk out into the sandbar with your kids or anything? Im wanting to take mine out there soon. Thats one of my best memories as a kid, running in that shallow water for what seems like forever.

I think those channel markers could be confusing for someone not familiar with that area. Ive heard alot of crazy stories of beached boats over there (although I have never actually witnessed any).

I havent made it over to Fridays yet this year. The last time I was over there (last year) I was so sick from a bad hangover I tried ordering one french fry on a plate. The waitress thought I was joking but I wasnt!

There is also very nice ramps near Marblehead called Mazerek Access with a nice parking lot. Best of all it's free.
