You are an inspiration to all of us! Please give my best to your dad. Marcus Z. |
Very good stuff here!!!!!!!!
Congradulations Darren. It sounds like you will be possibly breaking ANOTHER offshore record in an already proven winner!!! I have been to your site many times and enjoy all the pictures you share, so that some of others can see what's happening out there. Steve, that is an awesome idea donating your boat for a "father/son" record attempt, which I am sure will be much more than an attempt!!!!! Good luck to you all!!!!!!!!!!!! :) |
For the record.................
Darren did this all on his own...............and, while I am very proud of him, he makes his own decisions (especially about the speed he chose to target on Saturday). I fully support him in any project he wishes to undertake, but, make no mistake about it, this was his achievement, with some assistance from some very generous people, especially Bob and Dave. We have discussed this at some length, and agree that the best thing to come out of this would be for others to follow, and break this record. We hope that some enthusiastic physically challenged person or ,(better yet) persons will be given the opportunity to learn (as Darren has) to throttle at world class speeds. This means that a skill set must be developed under the strictest safety guidelines, and that may take time and patience....... but, it's certainly worth it. Darren's effort proves that if you want something badly enough....anything is possible. He is and always will be my hero. The "Can do" trophy is aptly named, but will have a lot more meaning if the experience is shared and broadened to include others. Besides, healthy competition always raises the bar for everybody. Thanks to all of you for your kind comments and offers... this sure seems to have united a lot of divergent voices. T2x............. P.S. Special thanks to Doug Lewis, whose courage, patience and talent have inspired Darren for years. |
Way to go Darren. Would really like to see you do the run with Steve Miklos or even your Dad for that matter. Either way CONGRATULATIONS and Best of Luck in your future speed record endeavors.

Congratulations on a Great Moment
It was nice to see these kind of things happen in our offshore world. After a bad day at the office and some terrible threads, I come to this one and this made my day. It really cheers a person up to read this. Congratulations Darren.
I would also like to get some details of how this event was handled from the start. As VP of Carolina Powerboat Association, I am sure this is the type of event that our club would like to be involved with here in our area. It would also be great to contribute back to our community the way you guys did. If you can, please send me the details through OSO or PM me. Thanks again for making my day. Steve |

The Official Press Release
Saturday July 19, 2003 was just another common summer morning for most people last weekend. Except for a few people in Toms River, New Jersey.
At 8am that morning - A silver van pulled up to a dock on Kettle Creek just off of Barnegat Bay. As the door opened and the elevator ramp motioned outward, out came Offshore Racing's #1 Fan as he is known to many. For those of you who may not know him by his nick name, his real name is....Darren Luhrs. Darren is the son of Rich Luhrs. Rich Luhrs is a former Mercury Racing Team Tunnel Boat Racer, former boat builder and lastly one of the best offshore racing commentators in the world. Darren at the young age of 25 has traveled the United States extensively in the past with his dad watching and enjoying offshore races. When it comes to offshore racing trivia, few can match the wits and "mental library" that Darren possess. Darren also proudly hosts one of the largest offshore racing photo history websites on the internet. It can be found at http://www.darrensoffshorephotos.com/ Darren was born with Cerebral Palsey. Although this may pose a physical challenge for Darren, it did not stop him from making his own mark in the offshore powerboat community last weekend. From the van to the dock, Darren was excitedly anxious to be the throttleman for Bob Christie, owner and driver of the 36 Nor-Tech Cat "Perfect Storm" powered by twin Nor-Tech 1000hp motors. Darren spent many hours training for this day in his dad's 28 Skater over the last year. This day was going to be the day that Darren would set his own mark. When all was said and done - after 2 passes on Barnegat Bay, Darren Luhrs throttled the 36 Nor-Tech cat to 120.2mph all on his own. "He would have gone faster if we let him," said Bob Christie When Darren returned to the dock, he was presented with the 4ft tall "Can Do" trophy by NJ Performance Powerboat Club (www.njppc.com) Darren feels that the best thing to come out of this would be for others to follow, and break this record. He hopes that some enthusiastic physically challenged person or ,(better yet) persons will be given the opportunity to learn (as he has) to throttle at world class speeds. This means that a skill set must be developed under the strictest safety guidelines. Darren's effort proves that if you want something badly enough....anything is possible. He is and always will be our hero. If you would like to congratulate Darren personally, you can reach him via email at [email protected] |
That is awesome, absolutely awesome. Made my evening.:)
