Air Conditioning question
Last night the compressor on my house made a noise (so my wife tells me) and now it's not running.
The blower in the house is working but the compressor is not. What should I check other than the breaker? |
Shut everything off and re-start
Check for 24 volts at outdoor unit (signal from t-stat).. if no 24 volt, check wires, transformer etc... If you have 24 volt's at outdoor unit, is the outdoor unit's contactor closed? if not, manually push in and see what happens (be careful your dealing with 240v at open terminals), (could be a bad contactor) If contactor is closed, is the outdoor condenser fan motor running?, if so, probably a bum compressor or wiring to etc... Other things to check for would be safety switches (if you have them) that could be "open" due to a condition in the system...IE, low refrigerant pressure etc... usually these are located in the outdoor unit and should be labeled on the wiring diagram. |
If you have the older fused disconnect, be sure to check both fuses.

I found the problem. A tie wrap holding the wire going to the fan motor let go and the wire got caught in the fan blades.
Still not working. Could this have burned out the fan motor? The rest of the system is working fine. |
Originally posted by Ron P I found the problem. A tie wrap holding the wire going to the fan motor let go and the wire got caught in the fan blades. LOL, those fan blades can do some damage. Glad you found the problem. Motor should be OK, just re-wire and see what happens. Also be aware that the fan blade may have also been damaged (out of balance) due to the hitting and cutting of the wires. Try not to allow the fan to run out of balance for long as it will take out the motor sooner or later. No fun without AC ;). Get it running so your wife is happy again :) |
Fan blades are fine and the wires were not cut. They just got wraped around the fan which held it from turning all night.
Fuses are OK but the compressor fan is not running. The blower in the house works. I'm still lost and not too into disconnecting wires. I guess I'll call for help.... HELP!!!!!!!!! |
OH NO
WHY ALWAYS IN THE SUMMER DO FANS BREAK? Ron you have no air at all? Hope you get it fixed soon. :(
|
I'm wondering if a wire got pulled in the motor. Would a continuity test help, Jeff?
|
All fixed. Once I unwrapped the wires from the fan all seemed OK but nothing worked.
After checking the connections, fuses and breakers. I called for help from a pro. They said to first press in the red reset button. I pressed it and now it works. Who would think an outdoor compressor would have an external reset button. Thanks for the help guys. |
Has to an ICP product
