Navman-Ipaq GPS solution

Did anyone read the article about these products in this month's PowerBoat magazine? I've been looking at chartplotters but think this might be a better solution since I can use it for other things. I only "need" a chartplotter occassionally and hate to drop hundreds of dollars on one just for the boat.

Any opinions?

Yes, I did, and a couple of other boating mags too over the past few months. Then I did a Google search, and found a gadget review site that also did a review on it. They were not so happy with it. Can't remember all the details, but do recall it took close to 10 mins to find the satalites. A fact mentioned briefly in Powerboat.

I'm researching PDA's now, and am discovering there are other GPS/PDA combos abailable that don't get the advertising of the NAV MAN. No idea how good they are yet.

I had a I-paq (sold it later), I downloaded a few maps to it, I was not too impressed. Screen is hard to read in sunlight. If you were to only use it occasionally it would be OK. My garmin is much better and faster

Yea, the sunlight thing had entered my mind. Most people have told me to buy a B/W chartplotter to see it, especially on the garmin 176s.
