Gooseneck

I am considering ordering a new gooseneck trailer for our 45' Apache. Right now it is on a 14 year old Myco tandem dually in need of some major rehab work. The current trailer is not a gooseneck.

My other trailers are single wheel, triple axles. They are not goosenecks either. Any benefit to sticking with the tandem dually setup over the triple axle setup? Will a dually trailer track as well as the others or will it wander and follow the ruts in the road?

I have seen several cats on goosenecks, but not many vee hulls. Any reason for this? Anybody here using a gooseneck? Please give some opinions and post pictures if you have them. Thanks.

Goosenecks

They do track better, and turn tighter. But there is no real reason to change. A properly built 2 axle trailer will track just fine, and is a lot cheaper to refurb then buying new. Your boat has a lighter lay up if I recall being an ex-raceboat. If you really have questions talk to Myco and let them give an estimate of refurbing it themselves.

I have a Myco Aluminum 3 axel trailer like new
had a 45 Smith on and was only used 3 times
PM me if interested

Hot Duck 07-28-2003 12:50 PM

Thank you for the response. I have spoken to Bill @ Myco and he advised that they do not perform any rehab work. My major concern with the current trailer is rust. There are some spots where the rust is flaking off large chunks of metal. This is occurring mostly at the rear of the trailer at the drive guard and around the area where the fenders attach to the frame. I am worried about the possibility of the trailer rusting from the inside out. This is the original trailer to the boat so I do not know if it has been dunked or anything else about its maintenance history. Basically, I would rather be safe than sorry.

Here is a link, I think it tows much better than conventional ball and hitch. It depends on how far you have to go though

Raypanic : Thank you for the response. That project of yours looks fantastic. My project is just beginning, but I am really looking forward to it.

Any time you spread the weight out you gain stability. I had two race car trailers, 42' each, one was tag and the other was a goose. I would take the goose anyday even though I lost space with the goose. However you do gain stability with the dually on the trailer. I think money no object I would combine the two -- Goose neck Dually. My .02

I WANT TO SELL MY TRAILER ITS A 1994 TARGET TANDEM DUALLY IT WILL FIT YOUR BOAT AND IN GREAT SHAPE!

Hot Duck 07-28-2003 06:47 PM

ScottB and Slingshot: Please PM or e-mail me some more info on your trailers. Any pics would be great! I am really leaning towards a gooseneck dually unless somebody steers me away from it, but I may go with a tag for the right deal.

Thank you all for the input. Please keep it coming. Any more pictures of goosenecks out there?

Hot Duck, where are you at in OCMD?? I get down there from time to time, my brother has an extra dock that fits my 26 footer. We were just down there for a long weekend, sucked up a dammed crab trap in my duoprop, sucked tight between both props, had to have my brother come out and tow me in..... &^%&ckng crabbers!!! I was 10 feet off the channel bouy, no bouy on the trap..... got it off in time to limp over to Seacret's and enjoy the evening!!!

sorry I can't find any better .
Goose necks are harder to get around with (Yes thats the facts !) They need a much wider turning radius . They are the way to go though .... With that much weight , and how long it is you should have it . It makes for a MUCH more stable ride .This boat was about 13,500lbs, and the trailer was almost 6,000lbs. Ran 85 mph any time, anywhere with a single wheel truck !! Handles like a dream !! :D Three axles are a lot more drag when turning tight and real hard on the tires, wheels , axles and suspension. 2 dually axels are more money , and if you are going to dunk it in the ramp 2 axels are better . With three you put too much stess on on the front one . You will blow tires and bend axels . Also make sure you get hydraulic brakes NOT ELECTIC ! Yes you can get an electric over hydraulic pump for the gooseneck too . Any quesions ,email me . Joe

Hey Boot - Thanks for the pics. I am actually considering running it all white for a while until I get the ideas and finances for a paint job. I am not really crazy about the vinyl graphics on the boat right now. She could look something like the picture below.

I just put together a quick photo shop hack job to see what it could look like. I erased the current graphics, stuck a flag and a number on the bow and threw a name on it. I still have not decided on a name, but I needed to put something on there to see what it looks like. I also thought that it might be cool to put the boat back to it's original "Kid Apache" colors and design...we'll see.

For right now I just need to rehab or replace the trailer so that I can get it around safely.

ScottB 07-29-2003 10:38 AM

I will email you pics asap I took some photos and my wife is having them developed today. I will shoot them to you as soon as I get get them back. It is a friend of mines trailer and it is in great condition. It still has some of the rubber nubs on the tires it has been used so little.
It is stored indoors and is all aluminum with stainless hardware. He paid 19k for it and is asking 10k
It looks exactly like the big steel Mycos but its aluminum. It even has guide poles. I have never seen bigger ones. My #'s are 561-304-3466 wk or 561-743-9487 home

puder 07-29-2003 10:42 AM

i can tell you for a fact that the trailer has been dunked in salt water.

Glad to hear you got it back from todd.

Hot Duck 07-29-2003 11:15 AM

I do have the Apache back. We went to Lake X with the race boat last week to do some testing and then went to Bluntstown to get the Apache. The engines were finished, but were not back in the boat yet. I did not have the time to sit there for a few days to wait for them to install the engines, so we moved the boat to Tres and his crew @ Martin Marine. They are going to dyno and install the engines and do some other miscellaneous things while it is there.

I figured that Ft. Lauderdale is not quite as far out of the way as Blountstown. We are in that area (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale) with the race boat quite a bit, so it will be no big deal to pick up the Apache from them when it is finished.

FunHome 07-29-2003 12:05 PM

boot, what kind of trailer is that?? It weigh's 6000lbs?? WOW!! I'd like to have a goosneck also!! Anyone know of any used ones?? ScottB sorry your friends trailer sounds awsome but to much for me!!

BODYSHOT1 07-29-2003 12:14 PM

Will...glad to see you were able to pick up the Apache & motors w/o any problems...

Lotsa luck with it!

Coming up to Point Pleasant in a couple weeks??

Marty

puder 07-29-2003 03:24 PM

HD glad to hear it all worked out. Good choice letting tres finish up the work. Straight shooter. No BS in his shop.

if you need somebody to drive it around for you while its in lauderdale i'll be down there in a few weeks ;)

boot 07-29-2003 04:42 PM

Fun Home, It's a steel "target trailer". It was made heavy duty for a 41 Cig with diesels . It has 3 9,000 lbs axles! :D And did you notice the size of the tires compared to the truck ?!?!
I added the bridge gusset to take the bounce out , and also a railway down the center so I could unload the boat in the driveway just for fun ! Of course I wanted to add a water tank and 2 motor cycle racks on it too . But I figured it was heavy enough !

Hot Duck 07-29-2003 05:16 PM

East Coast B: I live right in downtown OC, one block off the ocean. Shoot me an e-mail the next time you are down!

Puder: I can only imagine that the trailer has been dunked in the salt. Was it you that took a run in it with Todd this past winter/spring down on the east coast of Florida? It has some rust spots that may be able to be fixed. I am exploring the options now.

Bodyshot1: I would love to come to Point Pleasant for the race! The OPA events are always a blast. If we bring a boat to run, it will probably be the 39' Kryptonite. Maybe she has learned to play well with others now (ie...no spinning :D )! Hey, all I can say to Mark and Bill is that it has happened to the best of them and that tomorrow is another day. The Gladiator and Apache are both in Florida so I can almost guarantee that neither of them will make the trip. Even if we don't bring a boat, I would still like to make it up for the race!

Puder: Just saw your last post. So far Tres has treated us really well. I am absolutely amazed at his attention to his customers. It is funny having a boat doctor calling me instead of me having to track him down. It will take some getting used to, but I like it. You know, I have dealt with quite a few people in the industry now and Tres and Phil (Lip-Ship Performance) have been the only ones to take the time to call and keep me informed.
I can honestly say that Tres seems to be straight forward and that I am looking forward to a great working relationship with him and Martin Marine. Hey, between Martin Marine and Lip-Ship, why go anywhere else? :D

East Coast B 07-29-2003 06:20 PM

Hot Duck, downtown OCMD, fabulous!!! I've been going to the Chalet on 10th st. and the bay since I was born.. It's changed a lot over the past few years since Carol and Paul sold it and retired... New owner painted it an ugly color, but it still my favorite place, lots of memories with my past boats.... I was hoping they would sell it off as condos.... We'll be back down at some point.... Dammed job has been getting in the way as of late!!! Beers on are me!!!!

puder 07-29-2003 07:27 PM

HD you really did get the full customer servioce spectrum on this boat ;)

i most definatly did NOT run the coast on that boat with todd. I spent one afternoon with him and that was enough for me. I sea trialed it with todd, sort of. It was dark by the time it made it to the water (shot impeller tahthad to be replaced). SO the actual sea trial was the following day with the owner. To get it out of the water after the run instead of going to a crane facility it was trailered out at a public boat ramp. It was a VERY interesting proceedure, the crashboxxes and the crowd that ammassed to watch the proverbial "monkey f**king a football" didn't make things any better.

FYI i was an impartial observer on that sea trial, it was another OSO member who was the potential buyer.

regaurdless she will be a fun ride once you get her engines back in place!

ScottB 07-29-2003 08:14 PM

Hot Duck, I just posted pics in the part forum

WetKitty42 07-29-2003 09:41 PM

H.D.

I've had dealings with Tres & the guys at Martin MArine.

They really are stand up guys. I would reccomend them to anyone.

Good luck with the Apache

Fred

Nice ride duck. If you bring it to Point Pleasant on the 15th we might have room to use it as a pace boat.

Let me know.

Ron P 07-29-2003 09:51 PM

Oh and bring the 39. That boat was smoking in A/C...until...it spun.:( At least they can say they had the lead on the third lap. Wazzup and the Bad Boy didn't give em inch.

Hope to see you in Milwaukee with a smoking SV ride.

Hot Duck,

Catmando is correct about the gooseneck being easier on your truck. I have a GMC 2500HD, with Duramax Diesel Engine & Allison auto transmission, and the specs say towing capacity on ball hitch is 12,000lbs. Fifth wheel set-up is 15,000lbs.

We have a 53' Hauler, MYCO Black - never used. Triple Axel, changable bunks, true 5th wheel.
