Milwaukee race info?

Dates and times are easy, but what about best location to watch the races from. I was told that it looked as if the majority (if not all) of the race is within the breakwater area. If this is so then do we have to park outside breakwater and try to peer over? What is best landside location to watch the races if the lake is being less than hospitable?

I've been told that they are only passing through the harbor. They are going in the the north entrance and out the middle entrance. Then heading back north a couple of miles. I'd get a spot in the harbor. It might be rougher because of the wakes reflecting, but it'll be smoother because you won't be the open water. Plus you can still head up river if you so wish. Parking suggests that you won't be boating. If so, then there is a new park just outside of summerfest right on the water. It'll offer the perfect location for watching the races. Another spot would be from the Old art museum. The problem is that everybody will be there and you may have to pay admission.

Does anyone know the race schedule for Saturday and Sunday. When do they start and end. When do the big boys run, Sunday only or both days?

Thanks,
Rick

26ZX Donzi 07-28-2003 07:50 PM

According to a friend he thought that the entire area inside breakwater may be restricted, but we are not sure. I grew up in South Milwaukee so am familiar with the area - like you said Cord, I'm sure around Art Museum and Pieces of Eight it will be very crowded. Fully intend to take the Donzi unless lake is really nasty.

Not sure of schedule yet RV, but will post it before that weekend if someone else doesn't beat me to it.

Reindl Powerboats 07-28-2003 07:53 PM

PX, P1-5, One Design and F1 will run on Saturday, Supercat and Super Vee on Sunday with SCL, SVL, and F2.

Can't wait till Aug 7th, when I fly up to WI.

[ does any one know about hotel and slip accommodations for the race??

32 thunder 07-29-2003 03:10 AM

Lucy, Port washington marina still has transit slips available. You'll have to go about 25 miles south though.

26ZX Donzi 07-29-2003 07:04 AM

Cord,
Thanks for the link. In the course layout from that link it appears all racing is within breakwater and the North/South safety zones pretty much keep all spectator boats outside breakwater?

Cord 07-29-2003 08:22 AM

310-Port is to the NORTH!

Donzi-Holycow, you're right! I had been previously told that the race was going through the breakwall and never checked the apba site to confirm it though. Good catch!

stevel 07-29-2003 09:31 AM

Lucy,

Cops is running up for both days from Northpoint in Winthrop Harbor. Will will stay overnight at Northpoint.

You mean there is no spectator fleet viewing area inside the harbor?? That will SUCK. You will not see any of the race from an anchor outside the walls. Remember, you can't anchor in a navigation channel, which eliminates all the openings in the harbor wall. What about the mouth of the river near the highway bridge?? Or way south near the opening???

Waterfoul 07-29-2003 12:44 PM

It looks like you may be able to view the race WAY south or WAY north of the course. Looks like the north side, near the entrance to the yacht club and McKinnly marina might be best.

Cord, where are you planning on putting the boat in the water? Or are we going to watch from land???

Mike

Cord 07-29-2003 12:53 PM

looking at the map, I don't think you'll want to be on the south side. It looks like they will be directing most of the traffic through that entrance. The north one wouldn't be bad. You could always just anchor by the summerfest grounds/art museum. That the big hook thing that projects into the bay. They don't have it designated as a safety zone though. Better take your dramamine, cause it's gonna be rough!

lucy 07-29-2003 01:46 PM

working on it scott. will let you know.

mckinly marina

Can anybody tell me where mckinley marina is in relation to the map on the apba site. Having never been there I can't even tell if mckinley is in that breakwater or close by. Our group is slipped in mckinley and need to know some info for watching the race and general boating out on the big lake???? Any help would be appreciated!!:) :) :)

Cord 07-29-2003 03:57 PM

Mickinley is all the way to the north. South Shore is all the way to the south. The river is between the two. Summerfest ground is just north of the river behind that little hook that projects into the harbor. The art museum is just north of the summerfest grounds. Further north of the art museum is Veterans park. Veterans park is just south of Mickinley. South of the river is Jones Island which has the city of milwaukee sewage treatment plant. The "island" (its only a peninsula now) extends all the way down to south shore yacht club.

Mike-I was planning on launching out of Port and boating down. There are two ramps in the harbor. One is really crummy with no parking and the other is being used to launch the race boats.

ActiveThunderTodd 07-29-2003 04:58 PM

Tracy and I are staying at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. We'll be arriving on Fri. launch the boat maybe go for a spin on Fri then go back to the Hilton. They have an indoor water park with big slides and everything. We'll hang out at the Mairina as well.

We're not ones who like to sleep on the boat so we got the hotel room for the weekend.

See you all there.

dangerkitty2 08-01-2003 11:22 AM

We will be at the Pfister Hotel.

Waterfoul 08-02-2003 01:59 AM

So, are we gonna try to make an OSO raft off somewhere??? Sounds like a good idea to me!!

Cord, you mean Port Washington I assume??? Sounds good to me. Just make sure the tank is full!!!

candyman35 08-02-2003 02:42 AM

Mike,
I don't think there will be room for a spectator fleet the way the course is laid out. Check the APBA site. A large group of OSO boats are coming up from North Point each day. We are trying to make arrangements to dock and watch the races from land.

:fish: The Safety Zone to the South is the best viewing area, near turns 4 or 5!! Maybe the South-west area but it looks tight!

.................not to scale.................

Cord 08-02-2003 10:37 AM

Thing really do look tight, I'm just hoping that there will more room than what the map is showing. People should be aware that there is a cops run going up to Milwaukee for the races. I'm planning on rafting off with those guys.

This is the map off the APBA site. It looks real tight. The red X's look like the only viewing areas. Cashbrain should have some information on docking in Milwaukee in the next day or so. We could get an OSO/COPS group together on land and after the races go for a nice run. It's Venetia night at North Point on Saturday. We should have a large group for the party. Everyone is welcome.

Dan
