KENNEWICK -- Starting next season, Hydro-Prop, the governing body for unlimited racing, will provide a $500,000 bonus to anyone who can win the Gold Cup in an automotive-powered boat.
"I don't care what the boat is," said Gary Garbrecht, chairman of Hydro-Prop. "I don't care what the motor is or how many cylinders it has. And I don't care how many motors they use. They can stack 10 Yugos in a boat, as long a it wins the Gold Cup."
Garbrecht is serious about the offer, insisting it's legit. The idea is to encourage potential sponsors in the automotive industry to get involved with the unlimiteds. The offer goes into effect next season.
Garbrecht acknowledged that the turbine supply is limited, that the aircraft engines are becoming more and more obsolete, and the only engine types staying current and being built every day are designed for autos.
"We're really looking to the future here," Garbrecht said
