Pro's & Con's of strap vs. cable
 

I am putting a winch on the front of a Myco trailer for a 47' Fountain. Any opinions or experiences of straps or coated steel cables? My trailer has a cable and has been fine, but I don't use it very much.

I prefer straps. They are very resilient and can take a lot of abuse. Often times they as as strong, if not stronger than the equivelant steel cables. They are easier to winch and wrap. Only drawback is that they can be cut and fray.

Coated steel is not very good in dealing with the elements. Even stainless cable will eventually rust inside the coating and the coating is affected by UV and will dry and crack. Steel will also work harden and break if bent repeatedly.

I think this is a bit much for my driveway.

Go with a strap. My three previous trailers had straps and they are much easier to use (no tangles). Our current MYCO was suppose to have a strap but was delivered with a cable and I am going to change it.

I need to replace the winch on my Myco as well. Were are you getting your winch from? What do you think is the best one? Thanks

Unless you are getting an electric winch, you'd want a two speed one. They have a low speed for really cranking on the cable, and a high for just winding things up. Try calling Tom's Trailers in Butler.

If you go with the strap you should change it at least every other year. I've had a few break on me. They weren't cut or worn just broke unexpectantly. My new Myco came with a cable and at least I will be able to tell when its ready to be replaced.
