Ford vs Dodge

Well, it looks like I will be unloading my 2002 Dodge Quadcab 2500 4X4 Cummins soon. Mainly to try to lower my obligations (make room for a bigger boat?;) ).

I know alot of you tow with powerstrokes and I really like the 92-97 body style. What kind of things should I watch for when trying to buy a USED one? I was told that even if it has over 100k (with proper maint) you should have nothing to worry about?!?!?

Any opinions, comments...

Thanks Steve

PS it's gotta be able to tow 10-12k !!

I have a 1995 F-350 Crew-Cab Dually with the powerstroke and an auto trans. and it has 208,000 miles on all orig. equip. I would trust it to go anywhere...it pulls my 40' Excalibur down the road very well also, the body is still in excellent condition and it drives as good as new....just my .02.....Fred

Also when I bought mine people said to go with the 1995 or newer as they are the factory turbo equip models....Fred

I test drove a 1997 f250 crew 4x4 w/218k on a PSD and man, it flew!! You'd never know the odometer said 218000!! But for $14900, I couldn't justify...

Actually, mid 1994 was when the Powerstroke was introduced. The trucks are a great tow rig. I owned 4 between the years 95 and 97. My advise is to drive as many as you can. You can definitely get a "pooch" and will be dissapointed. I don't really know why some run sooo good, stock that is, and others seem to be underpowered. Anyway, if you are able to, compare different trucks and choose the one that fits you best, you won't be sorry.

That's the problem. Even if you can find a clean older one, it's hard to spend that kind of money.

I was looking for something similar this past spring. I was going to buy an older powerstroke and a car. After weighing all the cost involved, I decided on a newer Dodge 2500 with the Cummins and all the bells and whistles as my daily driver. Only one vehicle and I was soooooo happy when it fit in my garage.

GOOD CHOICE

I'm going to throw in my $.02 for mine! I have a 97 F350 PS crew cab and have never regretted owning it since new, as I don't any Ford product I have had through my life! It is my daily driver, but only has 97k miles on it yet and I surely expect it to give me the multiple thousands everyone talks about getting with these. There have been very few things I have had to replace on it and it is time right now for it's 2nd set of front brake pads. Never have had an alignment and just put my second set of Michelins on it and wouldn't hesitate for a second to drive cross-country! I don't think you are going to find much of a deal on a used one, especially in decent shape. I am continually surprised what they go for around here used! Good luck in your search! :D :frog:

It is hard to go wrong with either truck. I have driven cummins diesels for some time now and have been elated with them. I am now on my third Dodge, and it is like a dream. It is an 03' with all the bells and whistles. With either truck, you can always get additional power out of a diesel for not a lot of money. Make sure you thoroughly test the tranny on whatever you buy because alot of these trucks have towed all their lives, and the trannys get pretty unstable. Either way, good luck.

I had an early 94 turbo diesel and it was not all that great. The PSD came out late in the year and I think they called it a 95. I now have an X 7.3 and would strongly recomend the PS.
