Which marine speakers...MB Quartz, Babb, or Infinity??

looking to put (4) marine speakers in cockpit and (2) in the cabin. Also, looking for 10" subwoofer and amp. What are your suggestions???

Thunder32 08-02-2003 05:32 PM

thanks Troutly, I see that I can order them online from CA...right?? is that the best price for them??

victory32 08-02-2003 05:44 PM

What are you looking for, performance?, I put 3 sets of seperates and 3 12" subs all JL audio, ppi amps, and 4 2 way marine(alpine) down below, this system rocks and is super clean whether its jazz or some serious rock.

FWK 08-02-2003 06:21 PM

Depending on what you want out of your system. I have sold Babbs for over 18 years. They are a great speaker. I do not like the 10 though it is a full range speaker and not a sub. I can sell them cheaper than the online store.

Thunder32 08-02-2003 06:43 PM

I am looking for some crisp sound while I'm in the water next to the boat. Some good bass and as little distortion as possibe.

Lunatic Fringe 08-03-2003 12:11 AM

Victory32,
What vintage PPI amps are you running? I had a PPI bi-amp setup in my old Formula and loved it. Super clean and really good on the batteries. Was going to go with them again for my next system, but I have talked to a couple people that said they had some quality issues a couple years ago. I can't remember if it was last year, but one dealer told me they had a high warranty return rate on them. How are your's holding up?

mb quartz

Waterfoul 08-03-2003 02:43 AM

I would echo Troutly, Audiofn really likes to put the Babb's in boats.

And Forest will set you up right!!

jafo 08-03-2003 08:12 AM

Bought my Babb's from Audiofn- absolutely awesome sounding marine speakers!

BillR 08-03-2003 08:25 AM

If you are after sound quality; then MB Quart hands down.

liquid asset 08-03-2003 10:01 AM

I had a lot of trouble with my mb marine components, they blow the capacitors nearly every time, I think I'm gonna try something else, in a 6 1/2''

Andy Buzz 08-03-2003 12:52 PM

I am a distributor for all three. MBQuart just came out with an excellent set of coax speakers that I highly recommend. Their marine sub is not yet available. They are even coming out with a marine head unit real soon.

I have set up numerous systems with Babbs. To use the 10 properly, you have to set it up as a full range speaker and give them a dedicated true 50 to 75 watts each. Picture them like an EV concert speaker. They are loud and move sound well. For clarity, I usually add a set or two of MBQuarts.

Rockford Fosgate amps work very well in boats. I have brand new RF amps on sale for $125 each and about 40 available. I offer white fiberglass gelcoated sub boxes for $180. Call 813-882-8477 with anything you need or email [email protected]

I have a set on the way to Active Thunder for a new 37 being built. Going with three pairs of MBQuarts 6.5 in the cockpit, two in the cabin, one 10 inch sub and four of the new Xtant mono amps for mids and one mono sub amp for the sub.

Xtant recently introduced a mono full range amp with incredible dynamics and volume. Best yet, it draws less current than other cmps and does not get hot. Only measures 6 inches by 6 inches each. Stainless covers look clean too,

We can talk further in the am and if you desire, I can send straight to Pat for your boat.

Me Too!!!!! and I agree, they sound excellent. I've got 4 6x9's. If I remember correctly, Jon liked the 6x9's a lot, but said there are better sounding speakers in the smaller sizes and the 10".

Troutly, the grills are part of the speaker and can't be removed.

HOTROD2 08-04-2003 07:02 AM

FWK, I had Babb speakers on my boat and the 2 small round (6" maybe) went bad and I would like to replace them. Can you e-mail me some info? Also would like a lg. sub. thanks Jeff... Hotrod2 @triton .net

Audiofn 08-04-2003 07:11 AM

You can remove the Babb grills. They are glued on and you can order new ones. There was a time when they had a bad run of plastic and it seemed that every grill would get brittle and crack. At any rate Babb was real good about replacing the grills for free. You just pull off the old one (ussually with pliers) and then glue on the new one.

The babs are great speakers there is no doubt about it that they performace that you get for the money IMO is unmatched in the marine industry. You have to spend a lot more to get more.

If you have any questions about placement or combinations that I have used feel free to give me a call and I can offer up what ever knowledge I have for you.

All of the speakers are great,

I have MB Quartz and they are ear piercing and crystal clear. I have heard nothing but good about the babbs also.

As for subs, I have kicker 10" comps in sealed boxes under the bolsters and I love them. Just make sure you power everything all the way.

Just DO NOT go with the free air subs!!!!! They suck,

Also Andy helped me with my stereo and so Did FWK (Forest) both are stand up guys.

WILL;)

Thanks Andy for hooking me up with all I need.

Thanks for correcting my error:p
I was thinking that he meant covering the whole front face of the speaker.

I got mine from Jon also. Four 6X9’s powered by a RF amp. I'm very happy with them. The grill isn't the best. I am considering the Billet speaker covers to help the problem. I just hope they don't affect the sound.

RollWithIt 08-05-2003 03:14 AM

I have no experience with the MBquartz or the Babbs as far as how they hold up or sound. I do know that Kicker makes excellent sounding marine speakers in 6 1/2 and in subs. I have four 6 1/2 speakers and two 12" subs in my boat all powered by two Rockford Fosgate amps and the system cranks. Best part is I can turn it up while I am driving and it still sounds clear. Also, 27Fountain has it right, stay away from free air with the subs. Use sealed boxes.

boat4life 08-05-2003 05:08 AM

I have 6 focal 6 1/2's and 6 1 in. tweeters that I'm putting a true 65 watts per speaker, they sound great.

I vaguely remember something about me maybe having a used amp that I would send ya? Is that what we were talking about? If it was the night we were at the Toad FORGET ABOUT IT I claim to know NOTHING :D:D

Jon

FWK 08-05-2003 08:00 AM

Hotrod2, Jon iright, Babb is very good about warrantying their product they at one time had the baskets cracking and replaced every one even out of warranty. They are also owned by the Babb family and stand behind the name. That was a long time ago. I have not had any problems like this for many years. You can reach them @1800892.
The majority of speaker manufacturers today have given up on free air subs. Pioneer still produces a free air sub.

FWK 08-05-2003 08:19 AM

Thanks for the endorsementMike and Will.
Hey Jon are you close to splashing the boat? After that you need to come to STL and get CHART going on his fairing. Of course you will have to move in with them for a few months. This might hurt your business a little. Forrest

Thats the one. Something about it being more cost effective to give it away than sell it for tax purposes. You told me about a different time than that night at the Toad, but at the Toad you said you'd pay for shipping and would even come install for free if I wanted you too:eek: You remember that, don't you?????;) :D

Reindl Powerboats 08-05-2003 06:19 PM

Jon will know best, we like our MB's but they are expensive.

mcollinstn 08-05-2003 08:21 PM

Liquid,

If you are blowing capacitors, then it is because you are running your amp into distortion. Distortion blows capacitors (and overstresses speaker suspensions and overheats voice coils). If you need it loud, then buy yourself a cleaner amp of at least twice the wattage you are currently running.
