40 Baja or 38Scarab
The 40 Outlaw is a 2000 with 500's twin. Has a race lay up cabin simpson netting inside. Bravo drives. 120 hours very nice shape, also has a bini top.
The 38 Scarab is a 99 with 502Mpi motors with 150hours.Has a trailer. Cabin has all the goodies. Bravo drives very nice shape. Also has a Gps. Both boats have Hyd steering, nice guage package. The Outlaw is about 10k more. It also has a much larger cockpit. Both boats do the same speed. Which one do you feel is the better deal. Resale in the future. |
I think soon you will be changing your screen name from baja27 to baja40. That has a nice ring to it!:D
|
I like scarabs and that sounds like a nice one for less money. my.02

Go with the Outlaw. The race layup is a nice package and the 40 is a huge boat in every way.
Another consideration: How does wellcraft handle service since they dropped the line? |

Baja Daze I was thinking the same thing. I like the lines of the Baja but at the same time I like the amentites of the Scarab!!! The engine bay is nicer in the 40, ton of room.

baja27,
Had the oportunity to ride in a 40 Outlaw & 38 Scarab at the Miami Boat show 2 or 3 years ago. Same day only about 2 hours apart. Boat boats had 575sc as I remember. I am sure on the 40 Outlaw. Water was ROUGH in Gorverment Cut. Bottom line is the 40 Outlaw road better (imo) and was also faster. Best of both worlds. I will give some credit for the ride to the driver of the Outlaw. He has many many hours of seat time in all conditions. By the way I am the very happy owner of a 1999 36 Outlaw that we ordered new. Mark |
They both are great boats, don't think you can go wrong with either.
I have run in two different poker runs along side a buddy in his 38 Scarab, and I have to tell you that to be it is one of the best looking boats in the water. The 40 Outlaw is HUGE! It would really be a tough choice. If you like the cuddy setup in the Outlaw I would go with the newer boat, and larger power. Good luck and send pictures. |
Get Da BAJA!!!!
|
As stated above... I also love the lines of the scarab... and the cabin of the scarab would entice me... If the scarab had the 500's, it would be a no brainer for me... How much importance do you put on the cabin ammenities?? If not much, go with the baja. How much weight difference is there in the two that they have the same top end???
|
Thanks for the replies. East Coast B the Outlaw is heavier, by how much I don't know. The Outlaw has more power, but being heavier is the same speed as the Scarab.

Here's what you'd be looking at, minus the 3rd engine.
Same year, race layup, simpson interior...It's a BIG boat. |
Baja Daze that's a cool site. I guess the guy that ownes that boat made the exhaust come out the side, it's pretty wild. Is it a friend of your's?
|
Did the factory exhaust for the frony motor merge 2-1 then come out the middle. In the transon pic it looks like a plug in the middle.
|
Yes, the factory rigging had the center exhaust merge 2 into 1 and go out though the transom.

Like Adivanman said, stock the center engine exhaust will collect into a y-pipe and exit out the back in the middle(you can see the old tip that is plugged)...
|
Nick, is that the one at Thunder Marine? Looks like St Pete Beach in the picture running outside.
|
Cuda, yep...it spent some time there getting some goodies.
|
Daze - that is a fine boat your friend has.....how fast will she run?
|
It certainly is a beautiful boat!
It's FAST! ;) |
If the hull has a warranty then Wellcraft has to stand behind it. If they don't do the work then they will have to pay someone else to do it. I personally would have no problem buying another SCARAB.
|
Baja Daze what did your buddy do to the motors?
|
Don't remember all the specifics, but they're freshened up a bit but make a lot more hp than stock. Maybe he'll chime in here is he finds the thread.

Everybody here on OSO knows that there is nothing that can be done to these engines to make more HP. :) And why bother trying, even if you could, it would not be enough to make a difference. ;) And if you could, and if it did, what's the point anyway? Besides, we're not done yet.... |
I know, I know...shucks.
But I thought I'd at least leave you two 'scientists' with some inkling of hope. ;) :) |
It's the hope that kills you.
