Jefferson County, KS-- A Metro woman died after a speedboat crashed into her houseboat on Lake Perry Friday night. The victim is 58-year-old Jan Marshand of Overland Park. Witnesses say there wre three passengers on the houseboat and four in the speedboat. Police are not saying if alcohol was involved in the crash. No arrests have been made.

GO4BROKE 08-10-2003 06:17 AM

Retards like that give a bad name to performance boating and make insurance expensive. It seems like its always at night, and always a drunk.
I'm sorry for the poor people in the houseboat.

Speedboat looks a lot like an open bow runabout to me.

My condolences to the victim on the houseboat.

gdfatha 08-10-2003 02:45 PM

Gawd..How sad

Looks like bowrider went right between houseboats red and green running lights if they were on..

h2owarrior 08-10-2003 03:49 PM

Thanks lotoparty for the link. I was curious if 1) Alcohol was involved and 2) if lights were properly displayed.

Looks like they are asking these same questions. Either way, it is a shame. Boating is something you do for enjoyment, relaxation, stress relief, etc. this type of thing is very bad.

This is one of the reasons we do not run at night. We are either anchored off in a cove (with anchor light on) or we are in our slip. It is just too dangerous to run at night in a boat........at anything over and idle.

The guy that owns the houseboat is a really nice guy. He use to bring us his newspaper on the weekends after he was finished reading it. His boat was slipped on my dock at Perry. There were also a couple kids that got hurt with some minor injuries. :(

WILDTHING TAZ 08-10-2003 08:46 PM

IT'S TO BAD THAT INSURANCE COMPANIES USE THIS KIND OF AN ACCIDENT TO RAISE INSURANCE RATES ON HI PERFORMANCE. AND YOU KNOW THEY DO. THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF HP ACCIDENTS ARE VERY SMALL IN THE TOTAL PICTURE.I DON'T THINK HP ACCIDENTS AT HI SPEEDS ARE FEW TO NONE.(YOU CAN'T USE HTM.THAT IS A BOAT BUILDER TESTING HIS PRODUCT.)

H20 Cowgirl 08-11-2003 07:39 AM

The Lawrence Journal World and the news both don't mention the kids. Although, the kids were taken off the boat fairly quickly after the wreck. The couple that was the first boat on the scene has a slip caddy corner from mine. They said he picked the kids up and took them to the marina. It sounds like one of the kids toes were smashed and the other had a lot of glass in her/him. Wrecks like this don't usually happen at Perry. It pretty much blows everyones mind. I feel bad for everyone involved. :(

We saw the houseboat yesterday. It was a very sick feeling to see it. Ron and I had talked to the owner of the houseboat the night it happened around 7 or so. He was pretty smashed when we saw him at the American Legion. He had showed a picture to Ron of his fishing boat that he had run aground the day before because he was out fishing with a buddy and he was drunk then too. I am not sure who's fault the crash was but I do know the owner of the house boat was drunk that night around 7.
It is a very sad thing that happened and my thoughts are with the families of both parties involved.
I have been boating out there for about 5 or 6 years and this is the first time there has been a death due to a boating accident. Very sad indeed.
Here is a pic of the house boat that I took yesterday.

H20 Cowgirl 08-11-2003 12:10 PM

Outlawcowgirl & Banker Ron,

Do you guys know for sure that the guy that owned the houseboat was driving? Just asking because a couple summers ago I drove almost at least a third of the boats that are on Perry Lake. Maybe one of the other people were sober and driving?????

Actually, this doesn't really surprise me, but I've heard so many different stories about this tragedy..it's unbelievable. I feel bad for all parties involved! As far as the lights....hmmm....seems like every boat crash I've heard of that is what gets blamed on first. I do agree that some of the houseboats including mine could use more lighting on them then what is required. I'm do plan on doing something about that on my boat.

Outlawcowgirl 08-11-2003 12:22 PM

I do not know the driver of the runabout. I was just saying that the owner of the houseboat was drunk earlier that evening.
I really wonder if we will ever really find out what exactly happened.
That is too close to home for us Kansans at Lake Perry. And JB, that boat looked way too much like yours and it gave me a sick feeling to think that something like that could happen out there.

Here's a local news video.

And another article here with a little more info.

H20 Cowgirl 08-11-2003 12:23 PM

You wouldn't believe how many phone calls and emails I have received today from people making sure it wasn't my boat.

KCHOTBOAT 08-11-2003 12:25 PM

The correct story should come out in a few days on what happened. It sure looks like the runabout was doing more than 30 or 40 to end up on top of the house boat.

H20 Cowgirl 08-11-2003 12:27 PM

I agree with KCHOTBOAT!

I bet so girl!
Kelly, you know from the campers, called Ron and I several times to make sure none of us were hurt.

KCHOTBOAT 08-11-2003 12:34 PM

The story is coming up now on the noon ch4 news

wwwTOPDJcom 08-11-2003 12:38 PM

actually I think the boat wasn't going any faster than
40 because it would have gone clear over the houseboat
do the laws of physic's

robyw1 08-11-2003 01:51 PM

BIG bowrider. Looked like a 24' Arriva.

CigDaze 08-11-2003 01:56 PM

Wow. what a shame. :( Tragic.

OBNOXUS21 08-11-2003 04:25 PM

:(
Just got the Lawrence paper a couple hours ago and saw the cover. had a thought that it may have been your boat H2O, but it seemed a bit smaller.
I am really shocked to here abut something like this on Perry. Usually this type of thing happens at LOTO. The speed/ski boat was being driven by people 19-22 yrs old and apparently the house boat was idle and unknown whether or not the houseboat nav lights were on.

Good to hear for sure that it wasn't you H20!

H20 Cowgirl 08-11-2003 05:22 PM

Obnoxus21,

Thanks!!!

Your right, this kind of stuff doesn't usually happen on Perry Lake.
