Ford 6.0 powerstroke problems!?!

Just ran across this link from a different truck forum i'm on and was shocked at all the posts about '03 problems. You won't believe how some of these guys are being treated my their ford dealers. One guy said ford told his dealer to STOP working on his truck. The guy was told to go to a different dealer. Oh, and looks like ford's rip of of GM's tow hual is not working too great. One guy had a first gear downshift to 4000 rpm that caused him to jackknife. Crazy stuff!

We use an '03 6.0 PSD for towing the 36' Bacardi Silver. It has 10,000 miles on it and everything was going great until our return trip from running the kilo in NC. Then, while passing through Savannah everything just stopped. According to Ford, there were three major problems with the initial 6.0 PSDs. Cold starts, faulty injectors and a turbocharger issue. We ended up with diesel fuel in the crankcase and are still waiting on a final resolution.

better to have happen on the return then on the way down!

That's exactly why I looked around and bought a low mile (11k) 7.3. I'm sure they will have the bugs worked out by next year, but I'll let someone else do the Beta testing.

Cord 08-18-2003 11:46 AM

There was a big post on this not too long ago. Some of the issues sounded pretty major! Bad, bad start for what is supposed to be a flagship engine.

boot 08-18-2003 11:57 AM

They sure do you have their problems . HOpefuly they get thm figured out soon.

Wally, The Chevy( alison) trans did the same thing on most first year aplications . It was very common for them to down shift at very fast highway speeds !

Y'all buckle up now !:chimp:

I had an injector go bad on my '03 with only 1,200 miles.
Quick fix at the Dealer and everything good.

Had a check engine light go on last weekend coming back from Lake Havasu, AZ -- but the truck was running fine. At the Dealership now being looked at. 3,000 miles.

New computer re-flash update just released by Ford -- which will hopefully be a fix for several of the early-build models. Hard cold-starts, rough idle, AC not cold at idle, loss of power below 2M RPMs. I haven't had any of these issues.

Hoping my Dealer hangs in if the going gets rough.

Despite the early warning signs.....I love this motor and tranny combination. Hauls major A$$. Barely know the boat's back there.

Mine has been fine for 11,000 miles. It idles poorly but if that is my only problem I'll take it!

In2Deep 08-18-2003 06:01 PM

Check out blueovalnews.com for the insider details on the injector issue.

bojoe2 08-18-2003 11:07 PM

About 900 miles so far. The performance is great. I don't have any regrets yet. Just hope I'm not one of the unlucky. If so, I'll tell the whole world about it.

Ive got a 1000 miles now on my 2004 3500 crew cab long bed dually. I just came back from Emerald coast pr towing Radio Active. I am still uncertain on the pulling power over my 2002 Duramax, I know this is a dually and a long bed, which weighs more over my GMC 2500 crew cab, but on long inclines it lacked the pulling power over the Duramax, could it be cause not quite broken in and the additional weight of the dually. Any advice, it slightly hesitates from a stand still, but once rolling pulls strong, its just on the highway over 60 mph where it lacks a little power, thanks Jeff:confused:

fountain1fan 08-19-2003 09:32 PM

sorry guys my 2003 cummings is great NO trouble at all kilo kat sorry you hade trouble but we wish you the best in the quest for 210 mph robbie rogers

I have 9000 miles on mine and i love it.The bellhousing leak at 3000 was fixed promptly.I installed the quadzilla box and changed the air filter to a AFE and it hauls a$$.

boat4life 08-19-2003 11:59 PM

I have one with 11000 miles and haven't had a prob, yet thank god. I put 100 hp. edge chip 5 in. exhaust and airaid kit it, runs like a stripped ass ape.

Semper Fi 08-20-2003 02:04 AM

I have an old friend who I grew up with who works at Ford's Headquarters. I let her know of the problems and she is passing the info on. I also let her know of the power of this site, and others like it. The word gets around fast!! hopefully some good will come of it.

KiloKat 08-20-2003 06:55 AM

Ford just authorized a new engine for mine. I understand that the three major issues plaguing the 6.0s are cold starts/idling, injectors and a turbocharger item. Ford assures me that all of these have been addressed and are no longer a problem. I sure hope so because everyone on the Bacardi Silver crew is absolutely crazy about this truck!

buck183 08-20-2003 07:39 AM

Here's what I find amusing about this whole diesel thing.....

Chevy comes out with Duramax. All the Ford guys are screaming "Run"!!!!! Chevy has some problems. Everyone bad mouths it from day one.

Ford comes out with the new 6.0 Powerstroke. Ford has problems. Everyone says it's ok, they'll work it out. No big deal.

It's Ok for Ford to have some problems but not Chevy? Haven't understood that one yet.

I'm not bashing the Ford product either.....I just bought one with the 6.0. Just don't understand the thought process.

I JUST PICKED UP MY TRUCK FROM THE SHOP LAST NIGHT THEY WERE GOING TO REPROGRAM IT BECOUSE OF BAD ROUGH IDOL AND BAD GAS MILLAGE BUT WHEN I PICKED IT UP IT WAS STILL ROUGH ON HE COLD START. KILOCAT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOUR 6.0 TO QUALIFY YOU FOR THE NEW ENGINE.

KiloKat 08-20-2003 08:46 AM

Earlier in this post you will read where we broke down after our kilo run in NC.

Pollock 08-20-2003 09:24 AM

Mine has had several problems. too. The rear seal leaked and they fixed it. They changed some other type of cold start sensor that gave it more power.
After my first oil change it runs like crap after I shut it off and restart it after a couple of hrs but it goes away. FORD unpluged the oil temp gauge and now it starts fine. Nice and smooth, But the fan never shuts off and it sounds like a tornado. So I plugged the sensor back in. I would rather deal with rough idle than the fan noise.

Otherwise it pulls like no other truck. Way better than the old 7.3L

Sydwayz 08-20-2003 09:40 AM

I heard of a few fuel injector problems with Duramax's and other odds and ends, but I agree with Buck183. You guys spent BIG BIG BIG dollars on a diesel to put it to work. Its not working. Sure the Duramax costs a few more dollers up front, BUT, I sure as hell do not like making payments a vehicle when the dealer is "enjoying" it.

Nowadays, in the world of computer controlled engines, if the computer is -fudged- (insert other experlative); the whole thing is -fudged-. Are Duramaxs and Cummins being reprogrammed like this; new flash this, new flash that? Let stab at this? Lets stab at that? As anyone, I would hate paying more for one thing than another, when they are comparable in product. However, how are things comparable products, when one works, and the other one doesn't?

If you hook a diesel Ford up to the back of a diesel GM (or Dodge) for a pull off; the GM (or Dodge) is going to win if the Ford won't run. The GM (or Dodge) is not going to wait while the Ford reboots.

Havasu Cig 08-20-2003 10:43 AM

Our 03 Excursion with the 6.0 has been in the shop about 15-20 times and it has 11k miles on it.

First the rear main seal went out, then the turbo had to be replaced, the computer has been reprogramed several times, and the air conditioner sucks.

Semper Fi's friend has helped us, and it looks like we might be going to arbitration to get a new vehicle. The GM at our dealership has been helpful as well, and agrees that we probably need a new one.

They have been unable to get the A/C to work properly and when it is 120 at Havasu it is miserable. You have be be driving 70+ mph for at least 10 minutes until it blows cold. Driving around town it won't work properly. Maybe the 04's will be better.

baja27 08-20-2003 12:19 PM

I went to look at a 03 Excursion last night nice looking truck but the brakes totally suck. I was surprised that the brakes are so weak on a truck that size. My Sub has dual pistons on all four wheels. Can't wait for the diesel in the sub.

One of you photo shop guys, can you change the steering wheel pics of a Ford from the Cruise Control buttons to CONTROL, ALT, and DELETE?

BRUCE SEROFF 01-13-2004 12:13 PM

Hey Guys

Im lookin at a 2004 F250 PSD. Its build date is September 15, 2003

Do ya think im ok with that? or were there still problems at that point?

thanks

BRUCE SEROFF 01-13-2004 12:44 PM

10-4 ...thanks

PatriYacht 01-13-2004 01:07 PM

My first Duramax dually 03 was just about perfect. Never had to take it back to the dealer in 18000 miles. The resale was so good and GM had a lot of rebates in place at the end of the year so I traded it in for an 04. It's almost the same truck but with about 60 more lbs of torque for 04. So far no problems.

The Wizard 01-14-2004 04:22 PM

I ordered a 2004 6.0 a few months ago, I'm hoping it runs as good or better then my chipped Duramax....

bojoe2 01-14-2004 11:15 PM

OZ GOOD LUCK I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK IN 6 TIMES I HAVE A EARLY 6.0 WITH LOTS OF PROBLEMS I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THE LAWYER TO FILL OUT THE PAPER WORK I ONLY HAVE 11K MILES DOES ANY ONE HAVE INPUT FOR ME OR ANY INFLUENT AL WORDS THAT FORD IS AFRAID OF! MY LAWYER SAID TRY AND GET SOME INPUT ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Out There 01-15-2004 06:47 AM

Have a late April 03 Excursion 6.0.
11,000 miles and not a problem yet.
Great all around and 20 mpg on the highway at about 75mph.
A neighbor has an early 250 6.0 and Ford bought it back. Even paid to switch his lift kit to the new one. New 04 is fine so far with 6,000 miles.

BRUCE SEROFF 01-15-2004 08:10 AM

Bojoe2....

I dont know how many times you brought your truck back, but I have heard that ford was buying many trucks back that were having problems.

MitchStellin 01-15-2004 08:43 AM

I went with an 03 X with the 7.3. I didn't want to be the ginny pig and at 31,000 miles I have had no trouble at all. The truck is one year old now and I am almost out of warrenty. The engine is 100,000 miles so I should be OK for a few years.

The Wizard 01-15-2004 08:54 AM

Hi bojoe2,

Sorry to hear about the problems. I also heard many bad things about the 03 on "Thedieselstop.com". I read many posts and made a decision on buying the 04.

Its like boating...when you have many problems with a boat motor you have your eyes always on the dash making sure nothing is going wrong. I feel I'm going to be the same way with this new truck because of the problems they've had.

Not really a good way to enjoy something you just bought:(. I'll keep my fingers crossed...:D

Good luck,

 zzie
