OT: Spam

I'm a kinda low key computer guy,get I guess a resonable amount of spam that I delete but this morning it has been crazy an email with a download about one a minute. I have never had as much spam like this. Has AOL changed somethhing?

Clay Washington 08-19-2003 10:08 AM

Spam

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-19-2003 10:44 AM

I don't usually get too much, but today I am getting killed with them.
Subject line: Re: Your Application

Subject line: Re: Thank You

Watch out, viruses attached.

Magicfloat 08-19-2003 12:50 PM

Same here. What to do?

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-19-2003 01:14 PM

Don't open and keep deleting them.
First thing I look for is the file size. Anything over 5K I delete unless I am expecting something from someone I know.
A virus file is usually greater than 5 k.

C_Spray 08-19-2003 01:50 PM

I'm getting tons of "Message Undeliverable" messages that indicate I'm sending out emails to bad addresses, but I'm not sending anything out. Looks like someone's spoofing my email address to spam other people.

Can't wait for the National "No E-mail List" to go with the "No Call List".....:hothead:

Magicfloat 08-19-2003 03:40 PM

Im am getting the same.

US1 Fountain 08-19-2003 04:44 PM

I'm getting tons of emails with biiiigggpppeennusss, or biigginnsss as the subject. (Not neccessary those exact subject names, but you get the point, and they are all sex related chit). How do I prevent from recieving these? Seem to get at least 2 a day for the last several months. I never open them, just delete.

KiloKat 08-19-2003 05:25 PM

Same here. Constant all day. Did someone get our e-mail addresses somehow?

What's going on???

Audiofn 08-19-2003 10:43 PM

Delete them and DO NOT OPEN

Jon

CAP071 08-20-2003 05:23 AM

I thought you could just report them to AOL directly?

Hey Car doctor I see you are from Philly also!

KiloKat 08-20-2003 06:48 AM

I don't think this is an AOL problem. I don't use AOL and I am having the same problem all of a sudden.

HiPerf2000 08-20-2003 07:20 AM

There is a new version of the "sobig" virus going around. It is "spoofing" email addresses to make it look like you sent something.

update your norton virus definitions. Norton put our a new definintion yesterday for this virus.

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-20-2003 07:23 AM

Got 40 today! :hothead: :hothead: :hothead:

Clay Washington 08-20-2003 08:08 AM

33 more this morning.

Clay Washington 08-20-2003 08:25 AM

SoBig

SoBig Worn (Sounds like a bad porn flick)

So, what can we do about it?

eyezlee 08-20-2003 08:27 AM

I work in IT at my company and we stopped almost 400 sobig.f viruses over night. Its going wild right now. You need to update your Antivirus and be smart about opening mail. Sharky has good advice.

You may also want to check out some software called I Hate Spam I have yet to do so, but in reading some of the legit mail that I do receive, its getting good reviews.

Magicfloat 08-20-2003 08:30 AM

As long as I don't open anything from someone I do know, do I need Norton?

HiPerf2000 08-20-2003 08:32 AM

Cant do much about it besides having your virus definitions updated so YOUR machine does not get infected.

Just keep deleting them as they come in. It will go away eventually after the affected people get it off of thier machines.

HiPerf2000 08-20-2003 08:42 AM

eyezlee.....

i am running "i hate spam" on my machine. All it really does is the same thing that your Outlook filters will do for you, but with an easier to use interface. You still get the emails that you don't want.....they just get moved to a another folder. You still have to go through the folder (at least i do) to make sure nothing went to that folder that wasn't supposed to.... (i.e. an email from someone that you know that included the wrong "keywords" like....boat for SALE).

Magicfloat.....

you really should have some kind of virus protection on your machine. You can obtain viruses from not only email attachments, but from just viewing infected pages of a website. For around $30 - $40 for Norton...it is a good investment.

Mike J 08-20-2003 08:46 AM

I received close to 40 this morning with half as returned
mail.
WEBTV is a service only and I
only have a box like a cable
TV, Not a computer.
I have been getting them since
last week and just hit delete
ALL.

I get SPAM all the time... It is always bad for me, no real change the last few days.... I even somehow get it at work now! I have NO idea how they got my work address. I even set my filters here at work now and they dont seem to be helping. Somehow they got my name as grant golliver I have NO idea where that came from... but I get tons of mail with that name in it...I have put the name golliver and grant in my fiter and I STILL get mailfor that name...

My AOL name has ALWAYS gottentons of spam... I just click the lil' spam button on the bottom of the page...

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-20-2003 11:18 AM

I wouldn't press any buttons other than DELETE and Empty Trash. I believe if you notify your mail server that an email is spam or you respond to a link to be removed from the sender's list, you have just confirmed that your address is valid and you will get a whole lot more spam.
I still don't see why it is necessary for these people to do these things.
Too bad there wasn't some way of tracing this stuff back to the person or persons that do this, and by law enable us to send an electronic bullet back to their computer to the point it explodes! :hothead:
