The captain and the kid

Yesterday, my grandfather died. At 92 years old I feel lucky that he was around to see my kids. He got to enjoy them for 3 1/2 years and they loved him. His mind was sharp and his body better than most 50 year olds.. He had cardiomyopathy and we knew he would go soon. He was the best person I have ever known. He had nothing bad to say about anyone and never gave me or anyone I have ever known bad advice. He was from a time when honesty, integrity and family were above everything else. He opened my eyes to the ocean..Both its treasures and it's dangers. He loved fishing.. I remember last year we took him fishing and even as a 91 year old man... He enjoyed heading offshore @ 60 MPH (I took it easy) as long as he got to the reef to catch some snapper...

I have never really dealt with death well. But maybe because he went peacefully, I felt OK with it... I titled this post the Captain and the kid because that song really describes my relationship with this great man...
Except for the substitutions of the words month and winter... it's all there...

"He died about a day ago
while summer filled the air,
and though I cried, I was so proud
to love a man so rare.

He's somewhere on the ocean now,
the place he ought to be;
with one hand on the starboard rail,
he's waving back at me.

I never used to miss the chance
To climb up on his knee.
And listen to the many tales
of life upon the sea..."

Sorry for your loss. My grandfather passed away three weeks ago now and I have many of the same feelings as you about it. Glad to have known such a great man (there are so few in this world) and glad that he was at home with my mom and uncle. My thoughts are with you

Nice post. Sounds like one of a kind. We can all learn from men like that.

He's in a better place now and has 92 years behind him.....

Good luck...A4

Thanks all...
Too Old.. You're right.. "What better life could a man have lived than to be remembered so fondly? "

Thanks...
