Wellcraft Scarab KV - how much power

Hi!

How much power do you need to push a 38 Wellcraft Scarab KV to 80 mph + gps? 2 x 650 HP.....?

I know its a old design, but nice to look at. A classic. And reasonable priced in Europe.

I just went for a 150 miles boat trip to Ottawa with a friend that has this 1986 38 Scarab KV.
Former Miami Vice Edition repainted.
He hits 67 MPH with a 425HP TRS set up running 21 pitched 3 blades. He has about 450 Hours on it.

Hope this helps.

A friend of mine has a 1980 Wellcraft KAAMA SE with a pair SUPERCHARGED 509" engines that make about 730hp each and if his boat donesn't run 80mph it is/runs very close to 80mph. I have run along side of him in my 32' Active Thunder. His boat is made out of Kevlar and has #2 SSM and does NOT have a notch in the transom. The 509's he has have flat tappet hyd cams, bowl/pocket ported GM rectangle port heads, Holley dual 750 carbs worked over by Nickerson, Superchiller innercoolers and aftermarket GIL exhaust manifolds with dry pipes.

I think at least a pair of tall deck 540 cubic inch engines would be good engines to start with and supercharge those. I don't know what kind of budget you're on, but they're not really that much more expensive and I think you'll be better off in the long run. I love the old 377 Wellcraft/Larry Smith flat decks!----Today, they still have the look and profile of a true offshore powerboat! Have fun! :)

Im am building a 82 40' excalibur currently. Very similar hull. We are using ITS extension boxes and XR drives. Our horsepower should be 700ish per side. We are expecting 75-80 out of it. The biggest gain will be losing the TRS drives and transmissions. Good Luck.

GLH, any idea where this boat is today?

MrSneakAttack 04-13-2013 10:19 AM

it depends on what drives are on the boat
