38' Fever 2/850HP, how fast

We are currently installing a pair of 850HP SC engines in a 38' Fever w/ XR's. Anyone have experience w/ these. How fast? We are thinking about 105. Any feedback?

Better have spare drives!!!!!! Just in case. Best of luck!!!!

CustomRigger101 09-03-2003 12:58 PM

i'm thinking somewhere around the 80mph @5000rpms

totalmp 09-03-2003 01:01 PM

These engines make 850HP @5500. The boat runs 82MPH @ 5200 w/ 500HP's.

Best guess would be just north of 100. Maybe more but I doubt 105.

Smitty 09-03-2003 02:15 PM

My guess is 110 or more and a hell of a ride !!!!!

joe900sc 09-03-2003 02:33 PM

I agree with fountain38sc around 100. Probably not over 100mph on gps. Those drives will not hold up under that load. You'll need a speedmaster or at least a B-max.

Nobody Knows!!

Mike Carter is correct ,,,,, Which 38,,, what yr

3 diff spds,,,,, Pre 96,, 95mph

Mike I agree about the 42 w/900sc speeds. I don't know what the Merc 900sc dynos at but... I have never seen an engine that claimed to have 900 or even 1000 hp (except for KE & Sterling) come close to the merc 900sc power.

My experience with fountains are when you get over 900 (real) hp the 42 is as fast as a 38 or a 35 (I don't know why). I other words wouldn't the 38 fever with the same power and drives be about as fast as a new 42' fountain?

joe900sc 09-03-2003 05:04 PM

Let me make one more point here...The V bottom APBA kilo record holder is a 42' fountain not a smaller model. 142mph I believe.

TeamSonic42 09-03-2003 05:21 PM

Fountain makes a hell of a nice boat. They hold the record, true. But Outerlimits 42 GTX with Sterling power (1400-1500hp ea engine, PSI Blowers ) hit 148, in a pleasure boat ( non canopy boat ) with relatively new/low hours on the boat and power, and is expected to go faster with playing with props/break in.

Boat is named "Can You Hear Me Now" and was featured in a mag a couple of months back.

Just an FYI, not meaning to put down Fountains record, just some info. Good luck with the 38, but I agree with the other guys, drives wont last, need 3's or the B-Max.

A member of our club has a 89 42 with 850's. Had TRS's and kept lunching them. Went to 3's no more problems. He runs in the 90's with her.......Nice Boat !

Yeah, but think about how many xr's you can go through for the price of one #6 drive...
My estimate is 95 to 100 mph...

This boat will be our shop boat. We will use it to test our engines and drives. Until now, we used a 30' Phantom, but it just wasn't big enough. We will probably build a 43' Nor Tech demo or maybe even a 36' Cat in the spring. I'm sure the drives won't hold, but I'll probably use IMCO SC's, as we've had great luck with them in the past. If the boat doesn't run well over 100 we'll sell it or just make more power. We built a 31 Cig bullet w/ comparable power that ran 104 GPS, so I think we'll be OK.

Thanks for all input.

We did that project a couple of years ago with an 01 38 Fountain. It had a pair of 950 HP blown 572's with B-Max's. Ran 115-118 here in Oshkosh and 106-108 gps at Lake Powell (4000 ft) where it called home. It surprised quite a few west coast hotboats and cats last fall at the fall Heatwave Poker Run. Funny thing was that before it went out kicked a$$, the big name west coast engine builders said it couldn't make that much HP or run that fast, it idled at 900 rpms in neutral. It was a little loose after 105, but with some experience and common sense it wasn't bad. Enjoy!

RPM, how did the B max's hold up? Any pics of the hatch or engine compartment? Thanks.

Hatches - I'd suggest turning the scoops the opposite direction than shown. It gets a little noisy.

After a couple of issues with the B-Max's, we tore them completely down, did our thing and they are still running without issues.

Rod,

Thanks for the pics. Good #'s on the 572's.

Well----------?????

Inquiring minds want to know???

H2Xmark 09-05-2003 08:11 PM

Wow, what a project boat sounds like a blast, a step hull 38 with 1"shorter imco sc's and 850 real HP should run 106-109mph, maybe a little faster after some dialing in, good luck, I need to make it over and check you guys out some time soon, you are not far from Beaumont TX.
next time i'm around that area I will give you a call Steve

Well your doing it with a good platform "Fountain" the drive might be suspect, keep in mind what Fever Mike said about the buckets...
Good Luck, Have Fun and be Safe.

Took the boat out yesterday for the first time. Smoked an impeller, than the batteries died, than I lost a gimbal bearing and a drive coupler. I can't figure out why, the salesman assured me that the entire boat had just been inspected. Now, I will disassemble the entire boat and start over.

totalmp 09-07-2003 08:24 PM

Mike,

I know the routine, I just would hope that when someone says Just serviced, they would actually mean it. I hate stock power. I can't wait to pull out the stock 500's and put in my own engines.
