Default Ordered My New Boat - 300x or 2.5 offshore- need advice

Ok ,

I ordered a new Spectre 30 Carbon Edition with outboards. they start laying it up on Monday. I've never had an outboard boat before and want your thoughts , good and bad about the two types of engines.

I will primarily use the boat in the Gulf of Mexico . I like to run in the 85-95mph cruise range.

The boat will be very light and built with foam just like the 36's.

Trust me it will be trick. I just need your thoughts with the motors.

I know them both intimately.......

use the 2.5's............

The 300x's are faster....the 2.5's will give you more boating (reliability)...... and hang in within 2-3 mph at top end. Plus the boat will have better balance and handling.

It's a tough call remember on the 2.5's you'll have to mix oil and fuel as well, as long as you can handle that I'd do the 2.5s.

I had the same question earlier this year. After personally speaking with people at TNT, Motion, and others, I went with (3) 2.5 EFI Offshores from TNT on a 35 Motion. "Better balance and acceleration with the 2.5's" were the words I heard over and over. I was also told they were going through lowers on the the 300's quicker and breaking blades on the 3 blade cleavers (no problems with the 4 blade). I was also told they were not getting the advertised rev limit on the 300's.

I would go with the 300x's....I had 2.5's on a cat a few years ago (These were the new 280's) and had alot of problems. I was going through gear cases and prop shafts like crazy.

I have several friends with 300x's, and have not hear of one problem yet.

I would also add that the 2.5's did not like to be shifted while in gear. Was not good for the gear case because of the straight cut gears.

I don't know if this is the case with the 300's or not. Maybe somebody else can answer that question?

That is not correct....unless some "genius" cuts the wires to the shift interupt switch on the engine.... If set up properly these motors idle and shift like fishing motors.......

Anybody who has seen my boat knows it is very well behaved around docks, launch ramps and other shifting challenges..... and no I do not shut the motor off before shifting.... I shift constantly with both engines running. They take more abuse in one airborn leap (Ratcheting dogs) at 100 mph than they get in a thousand idling shifts.

There are a lot of "urban legend" issues around O/B's started by tinkerers who have no basis in fact other than intuition and the noise the units make while shifting.
