We always had an asphalt driveway when I was a kid and my home now has an asphalt one. If you live in the snow belt area, nothing beats blacktop for melting snow ;).

Also it depends on the size of the drive. My estimates for a concrete driveway were over 15K (it's big) so it was a pretty easy decision for me.

The only problem with concrete driveways up this way is dam frost heave. Did it at my last house,10,000 bucks worth of cracked slabs after 3 winters :( I went with asphalt at this house and so far 4 winters and not one crack. Yes it does have a few dents in it from hot days and the boat and truck sitting there but I just put down some 2x3 foot patio stones to park them on.

Yep, if you want to park your truck or boat in one location, you will need to thicken the base coat.

Concrete is the only way :D We charge around $2.25 a square foot for labor and concrete, fill and tear out is extra.

Get it colored and stamped too.. :D :D you'll love those prices LOL!

Thrillseeker know what you mean by fly by night drag box. Most people I delt with could understand the importance of a good subbase and how long it would last if it was not done right. If I paved across your front lawn without a good base it would look great for just about as long as you could see my tail lights.:D James

Use concrete brick pavers and your done.

For what it's worth, I've had Asphalt, Concrete, and now I have pavers. I like the pavers far better than the other two. All I have to do is spray them with some vegetation killer once a year, and I'm done.
If something happens to a spot, I can replace just those bricks. These are 15 years old now, and still look great.
