Best Props for 38 Top Gun

A month or so ago I mentioned my neighbor was looking for a used Top Gun. Well he finally bought one this weekend. A 2000 non step with HP500 EFIs.

The only problem are the props. Seems the current 28s only let the motors go to 4700rpms for a speed of 70.

What are the best props for this hull and engine package and how fast should it go?

Thanks.

Ron,

It was nice speaking with you. I think that using our test props will certainly be advantagous in exploring different prop options. It would also be helpful if I knew whether the props are stock or labbed. Of course this will assist us with determining the appropriate pitch.

Thank you for your time!

I am using labbed 28's on our T/S Gun with 500 efi's, so those 28's on a non-stepped hull are definitely to much.

BTW: With the 28's I am seeing 5000 rpm's in 105-120 degree heat in Havasu, and can hit the limiters (5250) here in San Diego with the cooler temps.

With labbed 30's I run at about 5000 rpm's in san Diego. I would think dropping down to some 26's would probably work. I think the general rule of thumb is about 200 rpm's gained / lost per inch of pitch up or down.

On our props once we got the rpm's close, we had them work on the cup to dial them in. Took three times back to the prop shop on our 28's.

Good luck.

Cig, what speeds are you getting?

On my 1996 Top Gun with 2002 500 efi's I ran 4 Blade 26's

Since the props were dialed in the best I saw was 79.9 @ 5000 rpm's in Havasu, about 100 gallons of fuel, air temp was 103.

I should be able to add a couple miles an hour to that in salt water and at lower temps.
