Paint on Decks: opinions please
Question for regarding paint on decks:
I am looking to repaint the white portion of my deck.
The deck was repainted in 1993 by the previous owner in Awlgrip, but I did something wrong to it in like 96 and it lost its shine and now it is a big sponge. The scoops that were under the cockpit cover and the hull still look great (painted in Awlgrip at the same time). I’m sure if I would have cared for the deck properly, it would still look good.
Anyway, I am looking to respray the deck in something durable enough to withstand a good amount of abuse and still look good. The shop I will be spraying in isn’t spotless, but at least I’ll be inside!
I have been painting cars (and boats, bikes and snowmobiles) for 20 plus years and am very comfortable working with Imron.
We are talking straight white here (Awlgrip color is snow white). No clear!
Let me hear pros and cons (durability ease of use, touch ups) of the following:
1. Awlgrip (Polyester Urethane) Hard as nails, wet sanding and buffing deminishes durability.
2. Awlcraft 2000 (Acrylic Urethane) An Awlgrip rep told me this was comparable to Imron.
3. Imron (Polyurethane Enamal)
4. R-M Polyurethane (Mitcher T uses)
Please don’t hold back, but don’t bring up gelcoating, its not an option.

We painted one of our boats with a brand of paint called Jones Blair. They use this paint a lot in chemical plants and it takes a while to dry but is very very hard, and scratch resistant. They make it in many colors and we have even used their clear over ppg paint. One time the nose of a fountain went up on the side of our bow while docking. He ran it up there pretty good and that is two edges rubbing eachother. His jellcoat was trashed and we just buffed some scratches out. The only problem is the lengh of dry time. It takes atleast a day out in the blistering sun.
Don't worry about painting in a not so paintbooth like environment. We painted this is a dirt floor barn. just washed the spider webs down and wetted the floor.
