Hurricane Isabel

Was looking at the NOAA's National Data Buoy site and found a buoy thats 250 NM east of Charleston S.C..

Check out the wave conditions....Data Buoy

HiPerf2000 09-17-2003 11:10 AM

WOW........

Wave Height (WVHT): 22.6 ft

Sydwayz 09-17-2003 11:12 AM

MONSTER wave action.

Mr. Demeanor 09-17-2003 11:13 AM

Now is that measured from crest to trough or.....:)

As long as my boats longer than the wave is high I'm OK right?

I'll assume that's measured from the middle of the wave, or is that from trough to the peak?

That's some nasty water!

Iggy 09-17-2003 11:36 AM

We've had this descussion before. I believe it's measured from trough to peak.

Look at time between waves (frequency) on the data chart.

Audiofn 09-17-2003 11:45 AM

It is measured Trough to peak. The bouy falls and rises and they measure the preasure change inside the bell. (at leaste that is how they used to do it.) 22 feet aint nothing for size however with the shallow water down there it can be devastating. We see wave heights like that all the time but we have deep water so it is not the same effect. In the "Perfect Storm" they were recording over 150 footers off the Grand Banks. Wicked stuff in that storm.

It will fizzle. Call that storm Fizzabel.

26scarab 09-17-2003 12:56 PM

I know that 100ft + wave heights were registered in the October "perfect" storm (Discovery Channel) but it just seems impossible. I couldn't imagine a wave that high.
I've seen some footage from storms in Lake Superior taken from frieghters with 30ft+ waves and that was incredible. The water would just roll right along the deck of the ship. Those 1000ft'rs looked pretty small in those films. I don't think I would want to be on one at that time.

Audiofn 09-17-2003 01:50 PM

Troutly as I recall from the Discovery channel show even in that rescue the helipopter pilot was saying that they would be scrapping the tops of the waves then there would be about a 40-60 foot drop down to the bottom. The 150's I have gotten from fishermen that I have talked to. Were the Andria went down I think that they were saying that they were fighting the roughs up to 100 but these fishermen were saying and I can not recal were (probably in the outerbanks) that there were reports of the really huge stuff. As far as 60's being big they sure are but in the banks that is not rare at all. That is one NASTY part of the ocean.

As far as the book being close to the trueth? How the hell do they know? There was no survivor and there was no contact with the boat for hours prior to the sinking so who knows what they were experiencing. Guess that makes it as about fictional as can be ;)

All you need is a good throttle man and a little tab.

Roger 1 09-17-2003 11:13 PM

Fred
How close are you to the ocean and how do you expect the hurricane to affect you?
Roger

Roger 1 09-17-2003 11:22 PM

Glad to hear that and I hope the best for the others who will feel the full effect.

Cignificant 09-17-2003 11:49 PM

I'm sitting about 60 miles from where the "eye" should pass through Virginia. They're predicting a lot of water damage along the coastal regions (HRPA - hang in there!!). Here, we're expecting up to 75 mph gusts and about 8-10 inches of rain. Most schools are closed until next week. My main concern are my elderly parents that live on the water in Va Beach - too stubborn to leave!!

And, I just did my liquor/beer run. We're having a hurricane party in my garage Thursday night!!

Audiofn 09-18-2003 12:13 AM

Cignificant go get your parents and bring them to the party!!! :D

Troutly I will try and get you the picture of the house on the cliff that washed away as the waves came crashing over it!! That was on shore were we know that the waves are a LOT smaller then they were out in the banks.
